Device states not updating - Bad PLM?

Featured Replies

Posted

I'm hoping someone can confirm that I've got a bad PLM.

When locally switched, none of my 20+ devices broadcast the change.  Level 3 event viewer shows zero activity (other than motion detector traffic).

However, when manually queried in the Admin Console, all the devices update and show the correct state.

All devices work properly when controlled directly from the ISY, linked devices (responders/controllers) work, and all programs work fine.

I've got multiple Access Points with solid green lights.  I've tried to move the PLM to different locations with no change.

I've Restored the PLM as well.

I'm not entirely sure when this problem started since I haven't monitored device states in a while. I run a query program each morning. I noticed recently that MobiLinc was not showing the correct state and this triggered a closer look.

PLM is a 2413S V1.B (ISY PLM info/status shows v9B)

Thanks for any help/opinons

Try running File | Restore Modem (PLM) to rebuild PLM link database.

Lee, Thanks for the reply. Tried the restore. No effect

Run Tools | Diagnostics | Show PLM Links Table.  If the PLM is defective the link table will be empty, assuming the PLM was not Deleted by accident.

The PLM Link Table shows 17 items.

17 is a very low count. Did you try a count a few times? Any Insteon traffic during the count can make it incorrect.

Do you know about how old the 2413S is?

There are many reports of them failing in around two years. Mine died at 2 years and 3 months. Just out of warranty.

I rebuilt mine from the information in one of the threads here. I understand they recently updated the hardware and firmware in them to correct problems.

I agree with Brian, 17 is too low for 20+ devices.  There is a 6 button KPL that is missing link records for all the buttons.  Likely the PLM has failed if this Show was done after a PLM Restore.

What ISY firmware is being used?

  • Author

Thanks guys.

Firmware is 4.2.18.

PLM is at a ripe old age of about 2-3 years. so I know I'm living on borrowed time. I've had PLMs fail in the past but I wasn't sure if these symptoms were consistent with a failing unit.

I've got a bad unit from another installation so maybe I'll try to rebuild that one. Thx again

I'd like to hold off replacing the unit until UDI make a PLM available[emoji2]

Brian,

I counted multiple times and consistently get 17 links

I tried again to "restore modem (PLM)" and this time noticed that it only took about 10 sec!

progress bar goes to 1% and then the process finishes.

During a previous restore it got to 1% and I walked away thinking it would take much longer.

So does a 1% restore further confirm a bad PLM?

My experienc is that slower write times are indicative of marginal communications

tandar,

Have you ever done a File/Remove PLM? It does sound like it.

If you have, please restore your ISY with a good backup and then repeat restore PLM.

With kind regards,

Michel

Michel, I've never deleted the PLM as far as I know. I plan on doing a factory reset on the PLM this weekend and hope that solves the problem. If I restore the ISY with an older backup (I'm not sure what would constitute a "good" backup) and then restore the PLM, and assuming that works, could I then restore the ISY with my latest backup or would that just reintroduce the problem?

Edited by tandar

Hi tandar,

What is your latest backup? You really don't want to restore a backup with which you had problems as it would make things worse.

With kind regards,

Michel

Michel,

I've got back ups from about each each month but since I'm not sure when the problem started, I don't know which one is a good backup.

If I do a factory reset on the PLM should I file/delete the PLM before I restore?

NO do not file. Delete Modem.

The PLM's ID will be removed from every device in the system.

Thanks Brian. But now I'm curious; What function does "file/delete modem (PLM)" serve and when is it required? If the PLM ID is removed from each device is there no way to re-write this information other than a restore from backup?

I believe it is for installers and dealers  to configure a standalone system. Then remove the ISY controller with PLM.

All appears to be working correctly. I did a factory restore to the PLM and then file/restore devices. Now the PLM link table shows almost 500 links and the device states update instantly when locally switched.

PLM is not defective. Thanks for the comments and help

Quickie, Brian can you help find the information you used to rebuild your plm

Thanks. Don

The problem has reoccurred. Most of my devices were not showing any communications traffic so I assumed the PLM was failing. I replaced a V 1.B PLM with a new v2.1 PLM, powered the PLM first and then the ISY, restored the PLM. I still have the same problem; most of my devices do not show any level three communications yet they all show up after a query. All the programming and scenes work fine and manual links all respond correctly.

I've tried a factory reset of some devices combined with a restore device and still no comms. I suspect that this has been going on for some time. I just failed to notice the lack of status updates since I don't usually care what the state is displayed as

I'm assuming the links have been corrupted for awhile so a restore from backup is not practical.

Does this seem like an issues with corrupted links? If so, what is the best way to rebuild my system? I've got a lot of time invested in programming and I would hate to lose that work.

Thanks for any help

Pick a SwitchLinc if possible as it will have less link records.  Do a Show Device Links Table.  Post the Show display along with the the new PLM Insteon address.

If you have any 2443 Hardware 2 and above Access Points. Test them with the Communications Tests.

I had two get flaky. One had a dim LED and the other would not send or receive in the Communications tests.

Same Base PLM board with problem power supply caps is also used in the V2 Access Points. I rebuilt them and they are again 100%.

Good Morning Guys,

The Address of the PLM is 34.E7.FD

Here is a Device Link Table from a SwitchLinc Relay v.28 that does not show level 3 communication

0 : 0FF8 : A2 00 34.E7.FD FF 1F 01
1 : 0FF0 : 00 01 2A.A1.DF FF 1F 01

And here is a Link Table from and Icon Relay Switch with similar issues:

0 : 0FF8 : A2 00 34.E7.FD FF 1F 01

1 : 0FF0 : A2 03 07.DC.AE FF 1F 00

2 : 0FE8 : A2 03 07.E6.F8 FF 1F 00

3 : 0FE0 : 00 00 00.00.00 00 00 00

And here is a table from a SwitchLinc Dimmer that does show communication events

0 : 0FF8 : A2 00 34.E7.FD FF 1F 01

1 : 0FF0 : E2 01 34.E7.FD 01 00 01

2 : 0FE8 : 00 00 00.00.00 00 00 00

I suspect that at one point (2 yrs ago)  I may have deleted the PLM while replacing a unit.

If this is the case, is the only way to rebuild the system to delete and re-add each non-communicating device?

Brian, How do I perform a communications test specifically on the Access Points?  I got 2 V2 2443's

Thanks!
