Include VRCZ1-1LZ remote dimmer ??

Hi:

New purchaser of an ISY994 IZW  and I've been setting up and including my Z wave devices untill I ran into trouble with

a 4 way setup.

I have the Leviton VRE06-1LZ  set up as the master switch connected to the load, and I have 2   "VRCZ1-1LZ virtual matching dimmer remotes" set up at remote locations

for a virtual 4 way setup.

I know the setup is correct because I can get it to work ( by associating the virtual remote switches to the master) with Leviton"s installer software.

I was trying to switch everything over to ISY and was recreating my Z wave network from scratch but

1) the ISY994 IZW  doesn't seem to detect the signal from the remote switches. it doesn't register when I try to exclude or include them ?

2)  Even if (or when) I would get them to register into ISY, how do I go about making an association between the master and the slave? I don't see any commands for

association.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

If it's a big deal and urgent, you could always look and see about picking up a used Vera for cheap, as they just updated them so probably inexpensive now, around $100 or less.  You could then use the ISY plugin and Network Module to get control of those devices as I imagine they cost a lot being Leviton Z-Wave.  What you'd do is connect them all to the Vera, not the ISY.  To control them from the ISY you'd have to use programs and network resource to turn them on or off on the Vera, but the Vera can also update variables on the ISY to indicate if they are on or off etc.  That's how I had my set up for awhile, had the ISY without Z-Wave, but Vera doing the Z-Wave connected to ISY with the plugin.  I'd have it do things even like if Z-Wave motion is detected on a motion sensor on the Vera, then turn on an Insteon light on the ISY, worked amazing.  Then in the flip side, things like if motion was detected on the ISY, use network resource to turn Z-Wave light connected to the Vera on.  Or you can use the Vera for the programming which you'd probably want.  So if variable on the ISY changes to 1, the Vera sees that, and it triggers it to turn on the main light etc.

That's what I love with it, they integrate easily together for the most part, so it's handy having a Vera just for unsupported devices.

Michel,

I missed your response, hence the long time to reply.  Anyhow, I'm running 4.5.4 and am running zwave 4.55.

When I try to add the VRCZ1, it detects the device, but it never gets added to the device list.  Here's what the event log shows:

Tue 12/20/2016 05:27:42 PM : Listening for Z-Wave devices to add to the network
Tue 12/20/2016 05:27:55 PM : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 2

Hi Geoff,

Thank you. This is very odd. Do you have more of these remote switches? If so, does the same happen with others? And, based on the post, I assume that that master works, correct?

With kind regards,

Michel

I reset the VRCZ1 and then was able to add/include it.  Here's a log of it working correctly:

Sun 01/01/2017 04:41:59 PM : Adding Z-Wave devices stopped
Sun 01/01/2017 04:41:59 PM : Device 39 of type 2.2.0 included into Z-Wave network

Sun 01/01/2017 04:42:15 PM : Adding associations for new Z-Wave device 39

Now the question is how do I associate the remote with the master VRE06-1LZ?

if I view all of the information about the VRCZ1-1LZ in the event viewer, here's what I see. As it shows, it's only associated with the ISY.  How do I associate it with the VRE06-1LZ?

Also, the only thing that I can do with it is to query it.  I receive no events, so I can't even write a program to turn on the VRE06-1LZ.  Am I missing something?  I get events from the VRE06.

Hi Geoff,

You should put them in scenes with responders.

With kind regards,

Michel

I've tried this, but the remote VRCZ1-1LZ will only add to the scene as a responder.  I would have thought that it should be a controller.  The VRE06-1LZ can be added as a controller or a responder.  Here's an image showing the scene with the 2 devices in it.  What does the "Action" field do?  Where do I find documentation describing this and what the controls in the middle panel do?

Currently, in 5.0.8, most Z-Wave devices cannot be added to a scene as a controller. I do have one Z-Wave Plus switch with reported scene capabilities that can be added as a controller, but it doesn't work. Whether this is just not implemented yet, or a bug, I don't know.

Here are the action definitions:

Hi Geoff,

Based on the command classes this device supports and the implied functionality of the switch, we will likely have to write some custom code to make it work.  By the description, I'm guessing this is simply a remote switch that has no scene capability itself; instead it is used to trigger scenes created from the actual scene-capable switch it gets associated with.

Andy, thanks for the info.

I created a new scene with 2 VRE06-1LZ switches in it.  I placed 1 of them into controller mode and left the other as a responder.  When I press the button on the controller, here's what I see in the event log

Now I'll fully state that I am a newbie at debugging ISY/Z-Wave stuff, but I've been writing software for 40+ years (including OS internals), so I have a reasonable background to interpret trace logs.  I would have guessed that I would have seen a transmit of a command to ZW041_1 (which is the responder), but I see nothing.   If I test the scene, which works properly, I see 2 transmits (one to each device).  I'm guessing that it's not repeating the command as specified by the "default" action type setting.

This is really an off-shoot of my VRCZ1-1LZ issue, but it was the only way I could think of to test scenes with a controller/responder.  I will also state that I haven't found anyone who has gotten this combination to work properly using any system (Vera, SmartThings, and even the VRCPG which the documentation references), so it may be that this just doesn't really work.

Chris, I believe that you are making a correct statement as the VRCZ1-1LZ is purely a virtual remote switch with no load capability.  And from what I understand, it sends direct commands to the switch that it's associated with it (i.e. on/off/dim/brighten/etc).  However, I don't see how to associate devices.

I consider it strange that when you include it, it shows up as a controller, but appears only as a responder in a scene.  That, combined with the experiment that I ran above, is a problem.

From what I've been able to ascertain (and I may be totally off base here) 3 way switch configurations in Z-Wave are similar to non-automated 3 way switch setups in that a traveller is required from the remote switch to the main switch (why the remote switches cost so much less). The remote switch transfers the on/off/dim commands to the main switch via the traveller and the main switch controls the load. I'm surprised the remote switch had Z-Wave capabilities and you were able to include it.

It is difficult to transition from Insteon to Z-Wave because the concepts are totally different sometimes. Thus the confusion between Insteon scenes and Z-Wave scenes.

IMO Insteon seems to be the most friendly solution.

The LRCZ1-1LZ doesn't have a traveller & doesn't need to be physically connected in any manner.  I am however looking at a non-Z-Wave solution as in this case as I have a traveler.

I may be mistaken, but I thought that when devices were associated with one another, that they could directly send commands to one another without the need for a controller and scenes.
