Cormacs Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Is hey ISY capable of monitoring outside temperature? I currently have the weather module but I live in a rural area and the closest weather station is 30 minutes away. Sometimes the temperature can be as far as 10 degrees Celsius off from my local temp. Is there any kind of sensor set-up that I can link to the ISY that will actually monitor a variable temperature sensor? All I can find is threshold sensors with an input output device. Another option I saw while forum trolling is using a wireless thermostat. Only downside is it says its operating temp starts at 3 degrees. Yesterdays temperature was -30 degrees Celsius which is roughly -22 degrees Fahrenheit. I'm running a program to turn my block heater on at different times based on ambient temp. Colder it is longer heater run times.
stusviews Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Any particular reason you don't want the heater on until a certain minimum temperature is reached rather than for a particular length of time?
Cormacs Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 It is set for certain times, based off of ambient temperature. If it's not very cold the heater doesn't have to run for as long. For example if I is below 0 it runs for three hours, below -10 - 5 hours, below -20, 7 hours and so on. My issue is I find my weather module doesn't give me an accurate temperature due to the closest weather station being 60km away. I was hoping for a local temperature monitoring solution. I'm curious if the wireless thermostat can handle -30 degree temps, I can easily find a waterproof location for it under a roof outside. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cormacs Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 The block heater is for my car. In case that wasn't clear. I also have a few other programs I wouldn't mind running based off of ambient temperature, such as a pair of heated dog bowls and a pair of heated pet mats for my outdoor kennel. LeeG Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 All the thermostats are internal home devices. The 2441ZTH is spec'ed for 39° to 104°F (4° to 40°C)
Cormacs Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 I know what the specs are. I also know that most of the insteon equipment can operate outside of there specs from experience. I'm just curious if anyone has experience using the wireless thermostats in sub zero temps. Or does anyone have an alternate solution to monitoring outside sub zero temps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Over time, outside temperature can increase, in which case the heater would not need to run as long as if the outside temperature decreased in which case it would need to run longer. So the starting outside temperature is meaningless--except to start the heating process. In other words, consider that the heater starts at a particular outside temperature and runs for a specified time. Over that time, the outside temperature decreases rapidly. By the time the schedule has elapsed, the interior is still way below what you intended it to be. Isn't the interior temperature the goal?
Cormacs Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 In either case I would need something to monitor ambient temp Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
larryllix Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I use two 2441ZTH units to monitor only. I don't attempt to control them with ISY as they don't seem to be supported properly and I did have my out building unit act strangely about 3 degrees C. Now I have switched to a CAI WC8 board with probes indoors and outdoors. It works well for this but has a long learning curve, lots of fiddling and it never worked properly with the humidity sensor. There are much more ready-to-go solution boxes out there for the cheap 1-wire temperature sensors.
Teken Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I have been working with this vendor for several months in the development of their Autelis Bridge. Using cheap 1 wire sensors and the Autelis Bridge linked to the ISY will provide you all the accurate and extreme temperature monitoring you could ever need. More information can be found in this link: http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/15093-firmware-130/
shannong Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 The 2441ZTH is wireless, can be powered by battery or transformer, and can use an external temperature probe. You could mount the thermostat on an adjacent wall inside, drill a hole, and poke the probe to the outside.
larryllix Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) The 2441ZTH is wireless, can be powered by battery or transformer, and can use an external temperature probe. You could mount the thermostat on an adjacent wall inside, drill a hole, and poke the probe to the outside. This may be the cheapest and simplest option if you can solder and you only need one sensor an area and the 2441ZTH is kept in a heated area. You would want a 5v adapter to run it from AC as the thermostat sends updates more appropriately when not on batteries. This will take stripping a 5v adapter cable and connecting the fine wires to terminals as well as the probe extension but the upside is you have battery backup built in. LeeG Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 "Only downside is it says its operating temp starts at 3 degrees. Yesterdays temperature was -30 degrees Celsius which is roughly -22 degrees Fahrenheit." How is the 2441ZTH going to report a -20 degree value? The display does not have a negative indicator nor is there a negative indicator in the Insteon command. The 2441 series thermostats report in .5 degree increments. That would allow for a maximum of 128 degree spread between lowest and highest temperature that can be reported even if the thermostat supported that wide a range. If the high order bit indicated a minus temperature the spread would be down to 63 degrees rather than 128. One might expect to get something more than the 4 to 104 spec'ed values but the basic command layout cannot support a -20/-30 degree value. The -20 degree solution will not be found in the Insteon thermostats.

As a point of interest here is an event recording of a 2441ZTH passing through freezing but unfortunately is sending out F bits so positive readings are maintained in this case. I thought maybe ISY was converting the Farenheit to Celsius but No the communication bits changed to C x 2 also. The display on the 2441ZTH reads "EE" at about 1-3 C but the reporting still functions, so far. ISY is not geared to interpret this reading as a signed 8 bit value even though it would work somewhat. It hasn't stopped reporting yet. Currently ISY shows the signed value as unsigned so that 254 counts displays as 127 degree C instead of -1 degrees C Wed 01/14/2015 08:30:14 PM : [VAR 2 6 ] 114203045 Wed 01/14/2015 08:30:15 PM : [ larryllix Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) Update: This 2441ZTH stopped sending updates at -3.5 degrees C but has most likely reached the actual temperature of my garage where it is temporarily sitting. Since this device reports temperature by exception and not on a timed basis this is functioning correctly still. The thermostat screen reads "EE" and ISY shows this as 124.5 degrees which is, apparently, a misrepresentation of the signed 8 bit value, although correct by specification definition as an unsigned 8 bit value. Accuracy? Close but I have no comparison in the vicinity. The Humidity is still updating on a timed cycle basis every 60 seconds so the 2441ZTH electronics are still functioning at this temperature. Update: The unit appears to have stopped sending temperature and humidity updates at this temperature. I returned the unit to a heated room and it immediately resumed updates of both values. Teken Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) Using a (current) Insteon solution will leave you wanting and disappointed. OP: If this is important to you and accuracy, temperature range, and extreme monitoring is the need. Using a 1 wire solution is the only tried and true method for those on a value budget. You can purchase any master controller you wish so long as it supports the 1 wire protocol you can deploy it. I've had my sensors measuring temps from ranging from -45'C to +130'C with out issue. Cormacs Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 That's what I'm looking for. Are they pricey? Where is the best place to purchase one? Do they sell packages with a controller and sensor? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Teken Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I left you a link in post #11 regarding the Autelis Bridge. The 1 wire sensors you can purchase via EBAY and range from $1.50 - $10.XX. Should you decide to follow through and purchase a unit please do reference the link in post #11 to the vendor.
Cormacs Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Ok. I'll investigate when I get home for work. Thanks for all your help. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
dbwarner5 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 This may be the cheapest and simplest option if you can solder and you only need one sensor an area and the 2441ZTH is kept in a heated area. You would want a 5v adapter to run it from AC as the thermostat sends updates more appropriately when not on batteries. This will take stripping a 5v adapter cable and connecting the fine wires to terminals as well as the probe extension but the upside is you have battery backup built in. As i read the owners manual for the 2441ZTH, it says: Waterproof Temperature Sensor (2433A3) INSTEON Waterproof Temperature Sensor is an external sensor that wires to your INSTEON Wireless Thermostat. When connected, the thermostat’s LCD display will show the sensor readings in small digits above the thermostat’s temperature. Does this reading show up in the ISY? Or are you somehow overriding the thermostats temp with the external probe feeds? I am looking to attach a probe to the heater element of a hot tub and then monitor its temperature and have alerts etc for out of ranges. Thanks, Doug

Thanks, Doug No. The external input doesn't get transmitted at all. Other people have successfully rewired an external probe in place of the internal sensor. If you want more than one temperature there are better ways. For just one 2441ZTH may be the cheapest. Edited July 10, 2015 by larryllix
larryllix Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) Another word of caution is the 2441ZTH reports by exception to it's internal rules. ie. if the temp changes more than about 1.5 degrees F. regular updates are not sent. The humidity sensor is sent on a regular basis, depending on version, and whether connected to AC input or battery, form 1 minute to 5 minutes. This can act as a heartbeat. The reason I am telling you this is if ISY gets rebooted and no temperature change is incurred yet, the reading will be blank or unknown. I believe that unknown when used in my program translated to a 0 degrees and turned a heater on. More experimentation is required to establish that as gospel. A simple heartbeat checker based on the humidity would be in order with a timer as a backup safety for turning on a heater mistakenly. This would be no different than any wireless device that may be critical for human or equipment safety. Edited July 10, 2015 by larryllix
