Wall-mount, battery powered remote?

Hi all!

 

I'm looking for a wall-mounted remote to be used for the purpose of shutting off a number of lights I have set to go on when we're out in the evening.

 

Ideally, I'd like to be able to activate this program with the switch, so for example, we can just start the program when we're leaving instead of at sundown or whatever.

 

Any recommendations?

Yes, if you purchase the frame kit and than add a standard decora face plate. It will look just like a wall mounted KPL.

 

I have several installed where I needed a remote keypad. In several areas where I didn't want to do the whole recharging thing those units are hard wired via a micro USB cable.

Just realized: I posted this in the Insteon forum. I have the Universal Devices ISY994i ZW INSTEON/Z-Wave Automation Controller.

 

I also have the Insteon 2413S PowerLinc Modem INSTEON Dual-Band Serial Interface...

 

But, so far, I've only been using the Z-wave functionality, and only have Z-wave devices installed. Can I use this remote to control the Z-wave stuff?

My (limited) understanding is UDI is working or has implemented cross protocol control. I would post your question in one of the beta release threads like the 4.3.8 RC4 one.

You can use a program with any version of the ISY to control Z-Wave devices with Insteon commands or have Z-Wave commands control Insteon devices.

But to be clear, it won't be the same as using something from the same protocol. If all your switches and remotes were Insteon, putting them in a scene would program the *devices* themselves, meaning that if the ISY croaks everything still works. If you use a program, the ISY has to be working. It has to receive the signal. It has to react. It has to tell the zwave device to whatever. I do it and it is quite reliable, but it is worth knowing. I use my Insteon keypads to control a networked whole house fan. And the ISY also controls zwave thermostats based on the same programs. But if the ISY barfs, I lose all that.

Quick follow up - 

 

I saw this in the review for this remote:

 

"I purchased this to control the brick-like proportioned fan controller recently released (2475F). It does a great job in general, however it's documentation is very poor. I re-read it 3 times to confirm my disbelief in just how unhelpful it was. There are features to it that make no sense, and when you combine it with attempting to integrate controlling devices with it and a ISY-99i, things just get stranger. It can run in two modes, I just wanted it to be a simple assignment of each button to each function I wanted it to perform. However in the mode you have to run it in, it tells the ISY that the particular button you're using is either on or off according to the ISY and it's status monitoring.

For example: I have it set-up where button A is light off, and button B is light on. Well, button A and button b have on and off status of their own, so when you look at the status of the switch in something like mobil linc, it tells you that status. That's no good when trying to figure out what's on or off in your house. Instead you have to look at the device itself being controlled and it's status. The other complexity this introduces, is you have to design your programs to be switch status agnostic. In other words, button press A = light off, no matter the actual switch status."

 

Can anyone comment on this? Seems a bit more complicated than I would expect.

I have an 8 button remote and it can be setup in one of three ways, each is on/off, each is on and each is off. In the first mode, a button press will either flash a red or green, depending on what it is sending. I haven't used the other two modes, but I assume it'd always flash red for off or always flash green for on.

 

I *assume* the four button controller is similar, but I'd think the a button would always send on and b button always send off. Maybe it is configurable? I don't have a 4 button scene controller to test.

Maybe this person linked a 4 scene controller as an 8?

fryfrog, you are correct. The Mini Remote always flashes green for On and red for Off.

 

Each the 4- and 8-button Mini Remotes can be put in any one of three modes; 4-button where the left side is Off and the right is On, 8-button where each button toggles Off and On and 8-buttonwhere each button is On-only. A difference is how the buttons are marked. The 4-buuton has a down carat on the left of each button and an up carat plus a through d on the right. The 8-button buttons are labelled a through h.

 

Edit: The ISY handles the button in the same manner as keypad buttons.
