ISY994i/* Market Share/Num of Devices Sold

Hi

I am trying to figure out how popular the ISY-* devices are in terms of market share or the number of devices sold till date.

Does anyone have any numbers like this?

Also, how many apps on various marketplaces exist that use the developer API to remotely interface with the ISY? Is there some central directory? I saw third party products forum, but I'm not quite clear whether they are the same.

I believe the number of units sold to date is held private for what ever reason? I've seen this same behavior in other smaller companies which I really don't understand.

There isn't a central directory that tracks the API's created to interface with the ISY that I am aware of.

Even a rough number would be quite useful, if any UDI employee cares to comment

I don't believe you're going to receive a reply as to how many units are in the *wild*. Keep in mind there are two numbers which often get quite skewed given the marketing wizards.

One is actual units sold to end clients and the other is the units sold to resellers. We have all seen million units sold stats when in fact these aren't true number and can be at anytime negated.

If I don't sell XXX wares I can always ship it back to the vendor like Smarthome, Home Depot, Best Buys, Walmart, Manards etc. All of these huge businesses have existing contracts where they can take on stock of items. If they don't sell or meet their sales expectations these units can be shipped back.

So in essence you could have 1 million units in the distribution chain. While in the same breath these same 1 million units could be returned at anytime and that unit sale would not be accurate.

The only true measure is the unit sold to end clients in the wild . . .

Hi earlenceferns,

The question is a very odd as popularity is subjective: what market? OEM, home automation, energy management, dyi, commercial, residential, Zigbee, Z-Wave, INSTEON, X10, etc. And, compared to what? In what time frame? Which type of developers?

As such, i am afraid I cannot really share with you the total number out  there in a public forum without causing confusion.

If you have specific application specific questions, you are welcome to send your questions to sale@universal-devices.com.

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi Michel,

I was primarily interested in the home automation industry (since I'm writing an academic paper and I wanted to motivate why we chose ISY as the target for our research and not others. there are other motivations, but generally, having some kind of market data is helpful to introduce readers to the area of research).

I do know that the most popular way to control an INSTEON network is with an ISY device and since INSTEON is quite well deployed, you could hypothesize that ISY is well deployed too, but to make that concrete, if I could say something like, to date, X million units of ISY have been shipped, that would be nice.

By developers I meant people who write Android/iPhone/Windows smartphone/desktop apps that communicate with ISY over the SDK.
