I've been trying to educate myself on the workings of ISY by going through the forums but a lot of links do not work so it is very hard to follow people's instructions.

It is full of useful information. http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=Main_Page I believe [i could be incorrect] that UDI moved to different servers a few times and some of the links in messages may no longer work.
