Deadbolt Recommendations?

Hi All,

I am looking at replacing my standard deadbolts at my house.  My family for the life of them cant seem to figure out how to lock the doors.  :-(  Anyway, I know there are Yale, August and others.  I have been reading through the forums and it seems there are lots of issues.  Anyone found a setup they like that works consistently and has decent enough battery life?  Zwave, Insteon or other?

Thanks,

Kerry

Hello Kerry,

Insteon is a no go for most people as there is only one brand and it doesn't offer two way confirmation of the lock / unlock state. Many of the forum members are using the Z-Wave in various flavors which on the surface appears to work just fine for many. Unlike many here I do not use or believe in deploying such lock sets for the primary entrances in the home.

There are too many security risks and liabilities for such . . .

Its the latest and greatest fad which I get completely but the reality is people often try to find solutions for problems they themselves can correct for free. Anyone who has kids can relate and I know personally about force protection in my home and at work etc.

But the reality is these sort of solutions are half measures in addressing a lack of common sense and awareness.

I'm happy with Schlage BE469 Z-Wave deadbolts. I have a program that locks them all at night and I use KPL buttons and a Mini Remote to lock and unlock them. A program can engage the lock some seconds or minutes after it's unlocked. A hidden door sensor can disable the auto-lock program if the door is left open, for example, when carrying somethings in or during warm weather and then re-enable the program when the door is closed.

You can probably do that with other locks (not Insteon), but I've been using Schlage for quite some time and have been very satisfied with both their performance, including battery life and, most especially, their customer service.

Stu,

Can you expand on the customer service portion and what that entailed? I always like to hear first hand experience from others as it speaks volumes of the service after the sale.

Schlage provided a replacement lock based on the serial number I provided. No receipt nor other paper work was required. What failed was the convenience of one touch locking. The lock itself remained secure. We just needed to enter the 4-digit code to lock the door.

+1 Schlage BE469.  I have two, they work flawless and have battery life ~ 1 year.
