bdstark Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I have been trying, without any success, to pair a Schlage BE469 lock to my ISY994i. I added the Z Wave module to a few months ago and promptly did nothing with. I am trying to add the first Z Wave device, the BE469 lock. The ISY is located approximately 20 feet away from the lock, using the internal antenna and sitting flat in the basement The lock is almost directly above, through the floor, but no other obstacles. I have zero experience with Z Wave, but have used the ISY for several years. Unfortunately, I don't have another Z Wave device to test on, so I am a bit blind on if anything would work. When I hit the "0" button on the lock after the programming code, the LED starts blinking. I have never received a message in event viewer while trying to add the lock. After a few attempts on the lock, I have to cancel out of the add. I have moved the ISY to the main floor to test, where it is approximately 20' away, but without obstacles. The PLM is not attached, so the ISY is in safe mode, but the result is the same. The logs are below for an exclude operation, and are substantially the same for the include. Is there anything to try or get more diagnostics? stusviews Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Being a security device, the lock needs to be fairly close to the ISY for initial pairing, like within a few feet. This is not too difficult as the lock is battery powered. Once paired, you can move to lock to its intended location.

I had to literally move my ISY damn near right next to my lock in order to get them to pair (using BE469 and BE369). Also - once the ISY noticed the zwave device was attempting to pair, it took much longer than a regular device to pair. One other thing you should check to to make sure that you have zwave secure device pairing enabled (select zwave menu > Z-wave secure devices > Allow). What are the exact steps youre taking to pair this lock?
hart2hart Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I bought a high gain external antenna so I could direct it at secure devices like locks for linking. Once linked I switch back to a low gain external which works well for day to day. ISY is in media equipment closet full of RF interference so internal not an option for me.
bdstark Posted January 9, 2016 Author Posted January 9, 2016 Thanks for the ideas - I tried today holding the ISY a foot from the lock, but still no success. To pair the lock, I am hitting Z Wave->Add/Include... in Admin Console, and then at the lock - hit Schlage on the front keypanel, the 6 digit programming code, and then 0. The LED blinks slowly after the code, and then quickly after I hit 0. After 0, it takes about 10-15 seconds, then the red X lights up. Nothing ever happens on the ISY - the Rx and Tx lights are of (not sure if they would blink though). I'll check if I can get a high gain antenna and see if that would help. Thanks!
MWareman Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 If close didn't work, a high gain antenna won't either. Have you tried doing a remove device first? Sounds counter intuitive, but often zwave devices seem to arrive with remnants of their manufacturing test network still in place. They won't join to a new network until they have been told to perform a remove.
DennisC Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I suggest trying to exclude zwave device two times in session and then try again with the lock close to the ISY. When I installed my Schlage lock that is the only method that worked for me. Dennis
bdstark Posted January 9, 2016 Author Posted January 9, 2016 I have tried excluding - still no luck. There is an LED on the Z Wave module, should this ever light up? I have never seen it light up.
stusviews Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 An often omitted step is to use the thumbturn to extend the bolt first, before pressing the Schlage button.
hart2hart Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I had similar issue with not following exact steps. Eventually factory reset lock and it linked very next time.
bdstark Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 I finally replaced the batteries and did the factory reset. The next time it paired properly, so everything started working. When I moved it downstairs, it no longer connects, but at least it paired. Thanks for the help!

When I moved it downstairs, it no longer connects, but at least it paired. Thanks for the help! That indicates that you need a range extender, a very common need for Z-Wave. The general agreement is that the Aeon Gen5 siren serves as the best range extender. There is no need to use the siren at all.
hart2hart Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Stu is spot on with need for range extender in Z-Wave network. However, I'd also evaluate where the ISY is located with its internal antenna. If lots of RF interference is likely in the area, consider moving the ISY or adding a low gain external antenna that can be placed outside interference area via cable.
klebel Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Do you guys mind if I piggy back this existing thread? I am having a very similar problem. I have followed the steps and suggestions everyone has listed. I tried to pair the lock less than a foot away from the ISY. (Not installed in door yet) I excluded it and then tried to re-pair it. All to no avail. On the ISY I have it set to include secure devices as required as well. I keep getting the same error. Below is the event log. klebel Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I got it. I have no idea why but a full factory reset worked. No idea. I had done ZERO programming other than trying to link the lock to the ISY. No codes or other options had been set yet. I would recommend to everyone to do a full factory reset right at the beginning regardless of being straight out of the box. Now, when I try and lock or unlock I get a jam message. I have to figure out that one now.
stusviews Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Did you follow the step for adjusting the direction of the lock?
