Homeseer HS-WD100+ Dimmer

Seems the thread containing this was a victim of the great forum snafu..   :P So - I'll re-summarize what I've found so far...

It's this dimmer: http://store.homeseer.com/store/HomeSeer-HS-WD100-Z-Wave-Plus-Scene-Capable-Wall-Dimmer-P2156.aspx

Summary, zwave+, central scene capable, instant status, cheaper than the Insteon dimmers, even cheaper companion for multi-way circuits. Screw terminal installation (much easier than wire nuts, IMO).

Down side: no separate ground. It grounds to the box it's installed to. Not an issue for me - but might be an issue in some parts of the world where plastic retro-fit boxes (and romex) are allowed. Neither are allowed where I am. It's a lot deeper than the Insteon dimmer, and has side tabs that prevent installing in a dual gang box, unless you remove them.

I'll post my pictures in a later post - but wanted to get this started again.

I included it to my test ISY (5.0.4). Flawless inclusion - it's in a metal box about 20' away from my ISY - and it's the only active zwave device on my test ISY currently. Not bad at all! Even better - instant status appears to work. ISYs console get's updated very quickly after a local operation. By default, it has a 3-ish second dim rate (though I'm sure it can be adjusted), and it has resume-dim turned on (when controlled locally it resumes to the last on level).

Here is a level 3 log the ISY created when the switch was locally turned on:

(I have yet to do a repair to see if it will work as a repeater for my lock)

Appears to support firmware updating as well...

The double-tap and triple-tap features of the switch appear unsupported on ISY. There does not appear any way to detect these. UDI: Here is a level 3 trace of a double-tap ON event:

and a double-tap OFF event:

Seems identical to me - not sure what's going on (yet). One thing for sure - the local load does not respond to local double and triple taps - so my feeling is that in Homeseer this is a feature of the controller programming - not the device sending separate signals out.

I could add the device to a scene - but only as a responder. The option to allow it to be a controller appears VERY briefly, then disappears. However, as a responder it seems very good. It responds quickly to on/off dim and brighten requests from a controlling Insteon dimmer. There does NOT appear to be any way to set the on level on the device in a scene though. IT just receives an 'On' - and comes on at whatever level it was last at. You can set the dimmer to come on at a particular level with a program though.

Now to figure out the zwave parameters it supports.

It would be nice to see ISY 5.x gain CENTRAL_SCENE support - as more devices will likely add this into the future. I think that CENTRAL_SCENE may tie very nicely into the desire to integrate Insteon scenes with zwave devices.

In summary - a pretty sweet device (even without native ISY support) - though a little work needed to make it a first-class citizen on ISY. I don't know it's level of support on 4.x.

Good info, thanks for this.  I purchased one of these switches, but have yet to install it permanently because it appeared to make a serious amount of buzzing with just about every br30 I had in my possession (3 different brands).  Do you know if there is a bulb compatibility list for these?

Posted

Thanks for the quick link - bummer they don't have any BR30's, I have literally 60+.

HomeSeer does have a contact link on the page.  You might approach them with the buzz issue and see what they say?  I'm sure other could benefit :)

I submitted a question asking about BR30 LED compatibility.  We'll see what they have to say...

Is the buzzing at 100% as well as dimmed?  I have 3 ecosmart BR30 w27s on an insteon inlinelinc dimmer. There's a slight buzz at 100% but I have to get close to notice it. They're otherwise fine at 100% on, and they only consume 14.5 watts.

But they are noisy when dimmed to any noticeable degree. One of them flickers on and off when dimmed.

Please share with me your Status Reporting experience with this device . Thanks

There is a firmware fix for these switches to fix a problem with the light flashing when they turn on. However, in order to install the firmware you have to install the HS3 software and a z-wave usb stick.  I can't seem to find another way to do the update.  Have you had this problem?

I refer to the discussion elsewhere in the ISY forum (  http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/20686-release-508-alpha-is-now-available/page-14   -pages 13-14) . While the Scene management of the Homeseer wall switches still needs to be fine-tuned in one of the next 5.0X updates, I am very pleased with these devices. Their Status Reporting is almost impeccable and they are Zwave Plus, giving hope for more future benefits in ISY. I am gradually replacing my GE/Jasco switches for the Homeseer, especially those that are part of a program, benefiting from the Status Reporting. This takes away the need to Query frequently and thereby reducing the network activity.

Just a quick note that could save you a couple bucks with the 3-way companion switch.

I got a HS-WS100+ and a Dragon Tech WA-100 - 3-way Auxiliary switch and installed them together.

Works just fine.

RIght now the Aux switch by Dragon Tech on amazon is going for $16.99 and the homeseer version isn't available, but on the homeseer site it is $21.95

For those new to these Homeseer rebadged and put custom firmware on the switches made by Dragon Tech.  So since the aux switch does not have any firmware it makes no difference to the  "smart" switch.

I know it is only $5, but I though some might find it useful.

Any idea if the double/triple tap functions work on the dragontech switches if you're using them w/ a HS switch (obviously not on ISY, but I own an ISY and HS)

I'm assuming you mean in the configuration that I stated above.  In this case I have read that they do for others using smart things.

I however don't have anything other than ISY that I'm using right now and I don't have the latest alpha firmware so I can't say for sure when using ISY.  I can't imagine it would be any different though.

The popular thought is that the aux switches are identical except for the printing on them.

Any Z-Wave users try out the DZ6HD-1RZ yet?  Reasonably priced, ZW+ chip, and supports "status feedback" (whatever that means)?

I'm done buying Insteon so when I replace failed switches I'm trying to figure whether to go with the HS-WD100 or this one.

Hi io_guy,

I think @asbril is using them and he's very happy with them.

With kind regards,

Michel

I do not use Leviton switches but Homeseer and I am very satisfied :

1.  Status Reporting

2.  Dimmer has sentinel lights to show intensity

I am gradually replacing all my Jasco/GE switches except for Fan switches which Homeseer does not have yet.

As mentioned earlier, I am very happy with the Homeseer switches as they give instant status report and the dimmer switch has sentinel lights showing the light-on level.

However I have not yet understood how to make the double-tab or triple-tap work with scenes.

As an example, in my living room scene, I added  a Homeseer Scene 1 to the scene as a controller and included other lights in living room as Default. I also tried with adding the other switches with Command On. But neither double-tab or triple-tab seem to work. Any suggestions ?

p.s. I am on 5.0.10

At the moment, you need to use a program.

The central scene commands are available as a program trigger that can be use in the if condition.

A great thanks for confirming that basically right now the double and tab do not yet work in ISY.  I am sure that Michel and Chris will add this to their list  :-)

Other than that I fully agree with you that these Homeseer switches are great.
