I've had two 2663 outlets fail that were controlling a window A/C with even a lower amp rating. An ApplianceLinc works.

 

BTW, I bypassed the electronics so that only one outlet is controllable, which is all I needed in another location.

Stu, the outletlincs are very sensitive to line noise. While It probably defeats the aesthetics purpose, a filterlinc between the AC and OL should solve the problem.

I probably wouldn't tempt fate and use that AC unit on that replacement dual outlet linc you receive. For what ever reason the specs for the unit are pretty sparse and indicates only 600 watts incandescent and 15 amp *all other* loads.

 

Normally this would not bother me for most hardware devices but Smartlabs hasn't been known to get a product right the first go round.

 

The On-Off Module does however clearly indicate the rating for various loads:

 

- General Appliances: 15 amps

- Resistive: 15 amps

- Incandescent: 1800 watts

- Motors: 1 HP

 

I realize its a wall wart and negates the whole purpose of a clean install. But, if your going to use them and they are going to blow why go through the headache?

I should also add that both failed while turning it on using mobilinc. Not sure if that matters.

I suspect the large inrush starting current may have damaged the relays used to control the outlets.

Especially if the compressor got short cycled.

I will see if I can read the relay model number and its markings in the FCC Database.

Gah!  I'm suprised it lasted that long!

 

An air conditioner - that's about the worst possible load you can put on a relay; I can't think of any worse household appliance.  The startup current is simply off-the-scale with those compressor motors.  That 11.5 A rating -- that's "running".  The starting current for that sucker is probably 20+ amps, but even worse, if the A/C unit is "on" when the tiny itty-bitty little relay in the outletlinc turns "off", there's going to be a massive arc inside that little relay.

 

They make special relays for A/C units -- google "definite purpose contactor" to get an idea of what they look like (there's NO way that'll fit inside an outlet); the little relays in your outletlinc aren't in that league by any means.

 

So, nothing wrong with the outletlinc, just the wrong application for it.
