Problems getting started. Router issue?

I just got the ISY99i and installed it on my network, which includes a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. The ISY99 is plugged into one of the its ports.

 

The software recognizes the DHCP device and assigned a NAT address of 192.168.1.104. But that's about as far as I've been able to get.

 

In the Administrative Console, after I login I get a red popup that says "Discovering Nodes; Retry!" That's about it. The software lets me change My Location but when I navigate away/back to the Configuration screen, my edits are gone.

 

Occasionally I get a red popup with a Java error about the existing connection being forcibly closed.

 

On the XP side, in Network Places, I got "My Lighting" to show up but clicking on it produces an error, "The device you are trying to use is not currently available on your network. Check to see if the device is on the network and try again."

 

Is this a firewall issue, a router issue or what?

Could be a Firewall thing. I know my Zone Alarm Software did funny things until I put the ISY99is address in the Trusted Zone.

Actually, probably three. First there's the port firewall in the WRT54G, although I *believe* it doesn't firewall on the internal LAN. Then there's Windows' firewall. Finally, there's a firewall resident in the A/V software I use here, Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

 

Usually though if there's a firewall breach attempt, Kaspersky lets me know it with a bright red popup and a screeching audio alert. I haven't gotten that.

 

What should I be looking for?

 

Incidentally, the ISY99 manual talks about an installation disk but I didn't get one.

The Linksys and Windows firewalls would not cause your problems, but Kaspersky (and other 3rd party firewalls) might, as they tend to be overbearing.

I don't believe there is an installation CD anymore.

My original ISY-26 came with a CD, but my ISY99i didn't have one. All the latest is on the web and in the wiki.

Thanks. I read the thread and kept playing with settings in Kaspersky A/V (unsuccessfully) until I moved everything to a laptop on the network and disabled Kaspersky entirely. That didn't work either until I used Internet Explorer, then it was happy. For some reason, JRE didn't like Firefox 3.

 

Having to disable a popular Windows virus checker in order to use the ISY99 is bad news. Can the ISY99 be set to run on an unprivileged port so virus checkers won't be interested in it, or won't this make a difference?

I do not think that the problem is privileged vs. unprivileged port; the problem is that ISY keeps a socket open (so that you get status feedback) and thus most firewall software do not like it unless you put ISY in their "white" list. Unfortunately, Kaspersky did not have the feature to exclude a device from the list.

 

Furthermore, you can assign ANY port you'd like to ISY (through the shell/telnet) and, if you do, would you be kind enough to keep us posted with your progress?
