wrj0 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 It would be useful to have a Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) feature in the ISY to support a fixed domain name provided by a service like DynDNS.org for dynamic ip addresses assigned by the local Internet Service Provider. Since not all routers support this feature, it would be useful to have in the ISY to prevent having to manually update changes in the dynamic ip assigned by the local ISP. Thanks.
Michel Kohanim Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hello wrj0, We thought about this feature and decided against it for the following reasons: 1. This feature is already supported by any router you might have 2. We would have a) figure out which one to use (no-ip, dyndns, tzo, etc.) and in most cases we had to pay royalties for using their code With kind regards, Michel It would be useful to have a Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) feature in the ISY to support a fixed domain name provided by a service like DynDNS.org for dynamic ip addresses assigned by the local Internet Service Provider. wrj0 Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 OK, Thanks, Michel. 1. This feature is already supported by any router you might have Some devices may not support DDNS, for example, the Cisco PIX501 I am currently using with the ISY99. But, I do appreciate your response. I had hoped that since dyndns provides code samples (http://www.dyndns.com/developers/specs/syntax.html) that ISY implemention might be relatively straight forward. I'll have to work on another solution - the new web modules option may offer some promise.
chris9999 Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Another vote for dnydns updater... I'm using a Rogers rocket hub for internet service at my cottage (Internet over 3G/hspa). It's a handy device that is an internet modem with integrated router but unfortunately, it doesn't provide dns update functionality. I use my own dlink router behind the rocket hub that does support dns updates but, because it's behind the Rogers integrated router, it can only see my local 192.* address so this doesn't work -- it would have to detect the external public ip address assigned to my modem for it to work. I resorted to running a script on my NAS that would poll dyndns and send an update if my ip address changed. This worked for some time but my older NAS had a system drive failure recently so I'm having to rebuild it. Until then, I'm unable to connect to my isy99. Considering purchasing a small pc for my cottage with a dns update client on it but ideally, my home automation system wouldn't be dependent on another piece of hardware running continuously. If the isy99 supported dns updates, it would save some hardware costs and also help to minimize the number of components that I have to leave up there. Thanks
Michel Kohanim Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi chris9999, Let me think about this a little. This is really not a very hard problem to solve ... the only problem is scalability and how we can handle it. Perhaps we could add something in the network Module like "notify my ip address" which sends out the external IP address once it has gotten it back from a server. Again, the main questions are server hosting, scalability, and administrative/operational costs. With kind regards, Michel
chris9999 Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Thanks Michel -- looking forward to your reply. Full DNS update capabilities would be great... if that isn't feasible, notifications over email from the ISY of IP address change would also work.
Michel Kohanim Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi chris9999, The DDNS service itself is not a problem since we do have an account with a reputable company and it does not cost very much. The main issue we are investigating is hosting a server that can handle all these requests (what is my ip address). With kind regards, Michel
