Where can I find documentation of the system variables that can be used in notifications for the ELK module ?

I have the ELK module and I don't think I understand what you mean by "system variables ... used in notifications".

That said, have you tried the Wiki?

http://www.universal-devices.com/mwiki/index.php?title=ISY-99i_Series_INSTEON:ELK_Security_Module

I do use variables and some ELK status changes can send me a notification.

Hi Michael,

I am quite new to INSTEON/ELK/ISY. After browsing this forum for a couple days, I begin to understand the technologies. However I still have a question about the necessity of co-existence of INSTEON and ELK within the same network. Is this because ELK has a better support for all kinds of security alarms and sensors while INSTEON has better other stuff like dimmers? Is it true if more manufacturers add security products for INSTEON in the future, we will not need ELK or at lease it will become not that important?

Please give me some general education.

Thanks.

Shawn

This review may help explain things http://www.liveautomatic.com/reviews/security/78-elk-m1-gold-review. There are other articles/reviews out there that can help educate you as well as other forums (lsee http://www.cocoontech.com).

I don't think Insteon, Zigbee, Z-Wave, UPB or any other protocol for home automation will ever be able to replace the need for a solid security system. Certainly, not the Elk.

Hi sanders2222,

Thank you so much for your hint and the review link.

So basically home automation and security systems have different focuses though they seems to have overlap products, one is for control/convenience/flexibility and the other emphasizes reliability. Then I begin to understand why ISY/INSTEON and ELK co-exist. It looks not very likely either that ELK can replace ISY, right?

Thanks.

Shawn

Security systems are life-safety devices. They are UL listed and are required to be very robust. They evolve very slowly because of this. "beta-software" with bugs is not tolerated. They have lots of security specific communication protocols. ISY is not intended to be a security system and I would definitely never rely on Insteon technology for security anyway.

Sorry if I missed it but I have a few zones in the module saying not configured. What does that mean? The zones in question match my other zones as far as setup in elk rp. All my zones are eol but a few say not configured. Thanks!
