n8huntsman Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Can someone recommend a lock that I can use in my setup. The gate is solid so I don't need a double cylinder deadbolt. You can't reach through or over the gate. Both sides of the gate are exterior so it'll need to be water resistant. I have Z-Wave, ISY, Insteon, and soon will have ELK. I'd like the lock to be able to be locked when arming an ELK alarm and also be able to be unlocked via a keypad either near to or integral to the lock. Haven't decided whether I want the keypad to be able to disarm the ELK. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks
n8huntsman Posted April 12, 2017 Author Posted April 12, 2017 I think I'm going to have to use either an electric actuator deadbolt and normal gate latch, or an electric strike, . With the electric strike, can you hold it in an energized state for prolonged periods of time or will it fry the solenoid? I'd like to have a fail-secure type but have it remain unlocked most of the time and locked when I arm the ELK or loose power. I assume this is possible otherwise fail-safe style devices wouldnt do much. Seems to me that the solenoid would be short-lived but they must be making it work somehow?
arw01 Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 We took a bid on a large vinyl gate that said it used a Schlage cylinder for the long through lock, MIGHT lend itself to a BE469. But since they wanted $2800+ for this 14' gate, it's not happening..
n8huntsman Posted April 12, 2017 Author Posted April 12, 2017 This looks pretty cool: https://www.amazon.com/UHPPOTE-125KHz-Wiegand-Access-Control/dp/B00UX044R2/ref=sr_1_6?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1492033367&sr=8-6&keywords=wiegand+rfid+keypad&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011 Since the keypad is wiegand, would it be interfacable with the ELK? Maybe I could just hardwire it and forget the Z-Wave
n8huntsman Posted April 14, 2017 Author Posted April 14, 2017 Everything I've seen so far (electric strikes, maglocks, electric bolts) would require a secondary latch in order to keep the gate closed while unlocked. This would be needed to prevent wind from swinging the gate open and closed. I could use the existing thumb latch. The problem is that exiting while locked becomes clunky because you'd have to do two things at once, electrically unlock and simultaneously use the thumb latch; not ideal. So I think the best option is to use an electrified lockset. I'm pretty sure the ELK could control this directly via a NO or NC relay. Might even make it its own area for independent control. Then a simple wiegand waterproof rfid keypad. I think this would give the capability to arm/disarm the entire system with one code or just that area with a second code? Ill add a standard door sensor to monitor it should make a pretty good setup.
