Current best method to handle alarm notifications?

I know this topic has come up several times before, and I've read through a number of existing threads on the topic.  However, some threads are rather old, and I'm wondering what would be considered the current best method for programming the ISY to send ELK alarm notifications.

Basically, I'd like to receive a notification when the alarm is going off.  Seems simple enough, but I'm learning ISY programming as I go, and am still quite a novice.  I've seen a few different approaches, but I'm even less knowledgeable when it comes to alarm zones, states, etc.

I've played around with the method outlined in the wiki (Send notification if a zone is violated while the area is Armed Fully.)  This works to some extent, but is not optimal as a notification is sent when a zone is violated, which does not necessarily translate into the alarm being activated.  (When the wife arrives home, she violates an Entry/Exit zone when the door is opened, and then an interior follower motion sensor is violated while walking to the keypad. Essentially, a notification winds up being sent every time the system is disarmed.)  I've thought about building in some delays to account for the entry time, but that seems sloppy, and truly good programming would have a better approach.

Any advice/pointers are appreciated.  Thanks.

I personally have my program set up as follows:

If Elk Area Alarm State is Burglar Alarm Send notification.

I have one program for each potential alarm state (fire, burglar, etc).  I also have a variable as part of the program that resets after 5 minutes so I don't get repeated txt messages from one alarm but that may be unnecessary. I gave up on trying to have the Isy note what zone was violated since most of my zones like the entry zone have a 30 sec delay built in and by the time the alarm was activated no zone was violated and it just didn't work. I do also have the M1 Touch program so that I can check zone history if needed remotely.

I notified UDI back in Jan about issues with the Elk Module variables for notifications not working properly via a support ticket. As of this post its never been resolved.

We've gotten conflicting reports about the Elk Module. One at UDI said it would be revised and another said it would not.

NHWA, Thanks so very much and precisely.

Scott and Gary, please review the post by NHWA.

Reviewed. What's your point?

The Elk module still needs to be updated.

I don't understand. Yes or No, should all of the Elk Module notification variables work?

I do not know what ELK Notification variables are and thus do not understand your points either. Please review the question posed by the OP and the answer by NHWA.

Please look at Support Ticket #14572 on 01/19/17 - This thread is talking about notifications from the ISY Elk module. My point is most Elk Module variables do not work. You know the ones under Emails/Notifications->Custom Notifications->Security drop down and variables? You were going to have Chris look at it.

Scott,

1. This post has nothing to do with ELK notifications ... don't understand why you decided to conflate the two

2. Chris responded to your ticket on 01/20/2017 (15 hours after you submitted the ticket). I forwarded it to you a few minutes ago and the contents are pasted here verbatim:

Hi Scott,

Couple of reasons it may substitute to blank:

- Just by their nature, some events do not generate a current value for all the possible substitution variables, so using ‘#’ for those entries will result in blank.

- If the names are not available in the ISY for an Area, Zone, etc. then it will also result in blank

In your case, it appears that at least the Zone and Keypad were not available for the event that occured.

With kind regards,

Michel

What are you talking about? The OP states "I'm wondering what would be considered the current best method for programming the ISY to send ELK alarm notifications." - in turn I said some variables don't work. In my opinion it does relate. It seems you have an issue with me, and possibly other like Gary, etc. Feel free to call me so we can hash things out as this is getting frustrating. I am getting upset with the way you reply back to me. Maybe your not completely comprehending things while answer multiple thread questions all at once.

I read it. Especially the part where he gave up because it doesn't work correctly. I pointed out issues months ago and was told the Elk module needed to be updated.
