Smarthome pulling a fast one?

Hi,

I haven't purchased any Insteon devices in a while but decided to take advantage of the Memorial Day savings Smarthome was offering this year. I purchased a 4 pack of Insteon plug-in On/Off modules.

When I placed my order, I always look for any product conditions that might be part of the sale such as returned, open-box, or refurbished. I found nothing like those conditions mentioned in this sale.

When I've purchased these items in the past, the units have always come with a thin clear protective film wrapped around the product and there is usually some sort of cardboard support frame inside the box to secure the item from rattling around in the box. In the items I just received, there was no clear plastic film on any of the units, and in one box, even the cardboard support frame was missing.

I suspect that Smarthome was selling returned or open-boxed items as new ...

This might indicate why so many of us have found it desirable/necessary to do a factory reset on Insteon devices before installing them in our systems to remove any existing links ...

I am a bit disappointed with this purchase ...

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience ...

I have very little faith in SH doing the right thing.

And yes every time I purchased a plug in module (dual band) it came with the clear plastic and the interior cardboard holder.   The problem is if you buy elsewhere SH tried all kinds of games to not honor the warranty.  I remember 8 or 9 years ago I tried to get Smarthome to honor the warranty on a switch that had the Tact switch problem (when they will still blaming people for over tightening the cover plate screws).  They said I would have to take it up with SmartLabs the mfg of the switch they (Smarthome) was only a distributor.  I told the guy he was a "Smart@ss" and hung up on him.

If they sent you refurbished modules. They usually add an "R" on the end of the part number label on the module or it has a retail part number on it normally not sold directly by Smarthome.

I bought some Refurbished I/O Linc modules.

They where brand new. In a retail box with the retail part number on the box. Not the Smarthome sales page part number.

Very big retail marked box for its contents. Just banging around in the box. As the cardboard frame was loose enough for it to slip out.

Was not anywhere close to being box recycle friendly.

As for the warranty dance of years gone by. I believe they no longer pull the who's to blame routine anymore.

I got the same lame excuses on the bad tact switches. Blamed everything but their product for the problems.
