KPL linking for controller local only?

Can i use the admin console to configure my KPL or does it have to be local? New to ISY.. Coming from a 2412n from way back

The ISY will not know about any links you create manually (locally). In fact, the ISY should be your exclusive Insteon manager. Add ALL your devices to the ISY using their Insteon ID (easiest) or by pressing each set button. Then create your All On/Off scene by simply dragging devices into the scene.

To Stu's point, manual linking will create confusion and limit what the ISY can do.  Scenes (some HA software calls them Groups) is how you manage links in devices, including keypad keys. I have a number of scenes that manage lights with keypad keys (3 way, etc) ... all the ISY does is program the devices, they work on their own after that. In other cases programs are invovled.

 

Start on page 21 of the manual and read about scenes.

 

Also, could you write out what you want the keys to do, eg Foyer turns on an inline link, etc. We can help more if we get the requirements.

Can i reset factory defaults. I have a feeling it still has links from old setup..

If you installed the devices in the ISY, then that should have cleared local links. I came to the ISY with 40 devices from homeseer, and I had notes on what each switch did and links... factory reset them in logical groups, in one room at a time. Start small on something simple, ... learn how the ISY does it, and then things will go fairly fast

Thanks a ton! I just unlinked and used scene creation in ISY and i think its getting there. Yes i removed existing links when adding KPL.

So basically all linking is done through scenes correct? I was able to create different scenes to achieve what I was initially trying to do by local linking. I had to factory reset the KPL like you said to get it to work.

Yep!  The ISY takes over the management function of the insteon network.  Give this a try

• You create a scene (New Scene from the bottom of the Link Management menu)
• Give it a name, lets say Foyer Scene
• You'll see Foyer Scene in the admin console listing in main, with a circular icon with three dots in it
• Click on the Foyer Key, from the Keypad in Main, and drag it to Foyer Scene
• When the box pops up, click the option to make it a controller
• They ISY will work for a short time... it will be updating the links
• Then, drag the actual switch that controlls Foyer to the Foyer Scene
• If its an actual switch with a paddle, click the box to make it a controller too, if its something like an inline linc, it doesn't matter
• It will work for a few seconds updating the insteon network

   

• Go and test it, press the Foyer keypad key and see what happens

 

There are different approaches. I use scenes a lot, so my house's lights will continue to work even if the PLM, or in a rare case, the ISY stopped working. They are the fastest to respond, too

Yes, links between devices are created by creating a scene and adding devices to it.  As you discovered, it's equivalent to linking devices locally, with the exception of additional links to the PLM to allow the ISY to control the devices and receive status.  As larryflix mentions, you don't need to create scenes and can instead use programs to handle triggers and actions, but you will incur additional delays due to the speed of the Insteon protocol and the need for ISY involvement.  I generally do the opposite from larryflix - I use scenes where I can, and resort to programs if I need more complex control.  I have lots of both.

I use programs only if a scene cannot accomplish what I want, specifically, one or more conditions. Once they're created, scenes do not use the ISY at all. Everything is handled by the devices themselves. The ISY is notified, but otherwise not needed.

The only thing i noticed that does not work is the status of the foyer on the KPL when i use the ALL ON button which is linked in my ALL ON scene with all the devices.

I have yet to do my first program since i have very little knowledge right now on the ISY but i would love to do a program that turns all my interior lights off when i leave somehow. Can't wait to learn everything!

The programs are all menu driven. You really can't can't make much of a mistake and from years of experience my house has never exploded....yet...

 

Grab a spare lamp and Lamp Module and use a SwitchLinc/Dimmer  and start experimenting. When you are done you can just hit the "Del" key and click Save, or just click on the Disable option for the program.

 

If you can run a mobile phone or login to a forum AND you are less than 128 (2^7) years old, you can do this.

Yes make it a controller, that way if someone turns the the dimmer switch on, it will also turn the keypad button on.  You can simply delete the dimmer from the scene, re-add it and check the box
