INSTEON 2334-232 Keypad Dimmer Switch with 6-Button on the fritz?

Hey all,

Last night one 6 button keypad in the master bath made the noise as if you held in the reset button then the switch lights all dimmed.  When I turned on the main light, the bulb flickered as well as the switch as if it were processing something.  I hit off and the same flicking at the pad.  After you click on or off 1-2 times, the switch becomes inoperable.  If I use mobilinc to turn the light on, I can then again use the keypad for 1-2 presses before it stops working again.

I then tried to update and reset the devices through the portal but that didn't help.  I then shut the power at the panel for the room, turned it back on and the switch worked perfectly for about 10 minutes.

I have since reset the power again and the switch is working but I assume at some point either while resting or being used it'll revert back to this issue.  This switch has been in the bathroom for at least 4 years without issue until now.

Any thoughts on this switch?

Second switch, same model but in the kitchen.  It also made the same reset noise but after, nothing worked.  Not even using mobilinc turned the actual bulb on though the app states the switch as "on".  The switch even flickered a bunch when I turned the switchlinc next to it on or off.  I thought at first that maybe the bulb was bad but it was not.  I also turned the power off at the panel and the switch came back almost at 100% working.  The only buttons that didn't work were regular on and off to turn the bulb on but insteon showed the switch as on.  Fast on and fast off both turned the actual bulb on and off.  The middle 4 a-d buttons worked fine as well.  I then reset the device at the portal and it works 100%.

This switch as of writing this is still working fine and it's been about 30 minutes.  This one has also been installed for at least 4 years.

Any thoughts on this one?  What could be causing this?  All of switchlincs and my one 8 button pad are all fine.  Just these two 6 button keypads started having issues yesterday into today.  Any way to stop this from happening again or are the switches eventually going to die all together?

Thank you!

Jerry

I have them "lose their marbles" sometimes. Sometimes powerline problems can confuse them.  Try this

  • Leave them configured in the ISY
  • Factory reset them:
    • Pull the tab at the base out for 10 seconds
    • Push it all the way until it beeps, then hold it for 3 more seconds
    • Release the tab
  • From the Admin console
    • Find the device
    • 'Right click' on it
    • Select 'Restore Device'
    • Wait for the messages from the ISY to finish
    • (If any wireless insteon devices are involved in scenes with the switch (motion sensor), they may have to be put in linking mode)
  • Test the device again

Hey am I crazy? Last night I was trying to pull the tab out but it seemed like on the 6 button that it doesn't pull out so I gave up on that. I can try again. Can you confirm that the 6 button keypad tab does pull out?

6 or 8... doesn't matter.  It takes a little care, sometimes the switch plate gets in the way. I've used a very small screwdriver to lightly pull back on it from the bottom.

(If it was an 8 and changed to a 6 in the past, it will become an 8 again. I can help with that,  but lets see if its a problem first)

Follow Paul's advice to reset the KPLs. Yes, the tab pulls out. It's easier if you remove the switch plate. A small (pocket) screwdriver helps.

Just curious, how did you reset the devices at the portal?

I meant restored not reset.

Still wondering. Nothing in the portal allows a reset, only Discover or Forget devices. Do you mean the Admin Console?

JSP0511,

I've had similar problems with KPLs. Usually a factory reset followed by a restore device clears up the problem

A power fail or power surge also seems to wreak havoc with KPLs

Another possibility is that the load is creating noise on the powerline. What type of bulbs are you controlling?

One bulb is a 1600 lumen Phillips and the other I believe is a 1500+ lumen Cree. These are the two brightest bulbs installed in the house. Everywhere else is a 60w led equivalent.

Depending on the specific version of the KPL, it may not handle LED bulbs well.

BTW, "I believe," is a guess. The only responses that address a guess accurately are guesses. If you want an accurate response, then provide accurate data.

Regardless of what bulbs are there, they've been there for years without issue until now. Seems like the switches are both still holding up after the last reset.

If I get a chance to pull them down I'll post.

JSP0511,

Most LED bulbs contain driver circuits. It's possible for their components to fail after being in service for years. If your problems persist after the factory reset / restore then I would suggest swapping out the bulbs. Do the bulbs have adequate air flow around them?.

Actually the bulbs do not have any airflow. They are in a box in the ceiling with a piece of glass screwed at four corners. I will loosen the screws so some heat can escape and monitor from there.

Thanks for that insight!

Being that both your bulbs are high output they probably generate some heat. Over time the heat can degrade the driver circuit.

Just so I'm understanding correctly,a faulty driver circuit at the bulb can cause the switch at the wall to have these types of issues?

It's possible if the problems only show up when the light is on.

You'll have to go through the process off elimination in this order

    1.  Factory reset / restore device

    2.  Try a different bulb.

    3.  Replace the device

My guess is that's it's probably a failing component in the device.
