Gremlins Part 2?

Recommended Posts

(With Regards to the other user's post on VERY similar issue - I first responded to his, but then I thought I better start my own thread).

Wow, ok, just wow.

I too have been having gremlins lately, and it reached a tipping point tonight, and now it appears my entire house is hosed up.
It started several months ago with the dining room light flickering.  Just a quick flicker.
Then it started this week to start blinking the kitchen light (same circuit, same keypad linc).
Then tonight it started to blink the living room light.  Not a flicker, a blink.  And, if I tried to manually turn on or off the kitchen light, it may or may not do it, and it would blink the living room light.

I think, ok, it is the keypad linc, so I toss the breaker to it.  Nope, if I turn on the hallway light, the living room light blinks.  Two quick, a pause, then 2 or 3 more blinks.
This is getting everyone upset (my wife, the cats), who go upstairs to go to sleep.
Except, now the bedside keypadlinc isn't controlling the bedroom ceiling fan.

It appears that everything that is scene-driven (the kitchen / dining room / living room / bedroom are all FanLincs.
I figure, I will power cycle the PLM (the white box with the network cable) and the ISY944i.  I unplug both, wait 30 seconds, plug the PLM in, wait 30 seconds, plug the ISY back in.
Now, in the admin console, I get all of my devices "Can Not Communicate".

It seems strange that Jesse and I have the same problem on nearly the same day!

P.S. 1) The real fun is that since most of my lights are FanLincs, I can't control them directly.  And, now with my ISY994i / PLM out of order, I can't control them at all!
Arrrggghhh..

P.S. 2).  I thought I would check the status of the PLM (like I had a dozen time tonight.  Yup, Tools / Diagnostics / PLM Info/Status. Yup - 13.20.44 v92 / Connected.

Except....  I'm holding the PLM in my hand, and it is NOT connected to either power or the ISY...

I don't have an SD card in the ISY, so that isn't the issue.  And, I've rebooted it twice, and it still doesn't see it.

Please, without kitchen lights, my wife will kill me by this weekend!

Ok, the oddness doesn't stop (actually, it will, since I'm going to bed Real Soon).

Since I've unplugged the PLM, all of the lights flickering has stopped.  I can now reliably turn the lights on & off!
I can't do the same for the fans, since they seems to have reset themselves all to "High", which isn't very good.

Gary,

Ok, maybe I do have an SD card - I have a rubber grommet where it says SD Card, so I thought I didn't have one.

How old is your PLM?

Ok, Now I'm REALLY concerned....

I unplugged & plugged the PLM back in, and went downstairs, ostensibly to feed the cats.
When I was going into the kitchen, I instinctively hit the button to turn on the kitchen light (Fanlinc), and it worked.

And no blinking!

So, I came upstairs, and wrote the message two up "(all lights have stopped flickering)".  But, in the Event Viewer Level 3, it was going:
Wed 10/18/2017 10:13:59 PM : [  43 9C 64 1] Replacing PLM links (locally and in PLM)

...

like it had a dozen times before.

THEN, suddenly, something new started:

And, yup, it is back in operation.

I did a full query, and all the red ! are now green in the admin console, and all appears good with the world.

I can even control the bedroom ceiling fan speed, so my wife will be happy when she wakes up tomorrow morning.

.

Ok, so...the $64,000 question:

What was the likely culprit?
Is it in failure mode, and I'm just lucky right now?

Yeah, looking at it -
2413S
V 1.0

0931

Perhaps it's time for a new one.

I didn't know they had a "lifetime" issue.

There are hundreds of posts on here about failures and that they last two years.

But wait, what about the phantom PLM - the ISY reporting that it was connected, when I was holding it in my hand...

Before I drop $75 on a new PLM, I'd like to make sure it isn't the ISY....

V1.0 is the original design of the 2413S PLM. It has rework in it to add a power supply update. A coil and capacitor where added above the main board.

0931 is 31st week of 2009.

Here is a very long thread on PLM issues and how some of use repaired them.

http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/13866-repair-of-2413s-plm-when-the-power-supply-fails/

I would suspect your is on it way out. One symptom is works for a short time after a power cycle.

Link Database almost empty and a PLM restore may correct for a short time.

LED on side dim or out.

Smarthome has posted some replies on reviews. Indicated V2.3 and above. Has updated components and should be more reliable.

Information Only:

For the sake of clarity you SHOULD NOT unplug the 2413S PLM while the ISY Series Controller is up and running. This will cause random issues you noted up above so the correct process is to power down the ISY Series Controller. Unplug the 2413S PLM for what ever reason like reading the production date or replacing it. Then insert the 2413S PLM into the electrical outlet and wait about 5~10 seconds.

Then, apply power to the ISY Series Controller . . .

The only reason the ISY Series Controller displayed the firmware when you unplugged the 2413S PLM is because that information was cached in the system.

You got more time on your v1.0 than most users got.

Typical failure was around two years and a few months. Just over the two year warranty.

Good Evening Everyone!

Ok, I've read the instructions on how to replace a PLM here: http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY-99i/ISY-26_INSTEON:File_Menu#Restore_Modem_.28PLM.29 (about 1/2 down the page.

I recall reading something, somewhere else(?) that before I replace the PLM, I need to have all my "radio only" devices in programming mode.
Does that count Z-wave or only Insteon (like the Mini Remote Control Keypad)?

Also, I got my PLM (from Amazon) - it is model 2413S / revision 2.4 / 2917.  Any idea what the 2.4 revision does over the new & improved 2.3?

Thank.

NO only one Insteon RF device in programming mode at one time or they garbage each other. Don't have Z-Wave so can't say.

If you have any of the Pro featured ISY994i models you can turn off automatic updates to battery devices then restore them individually. After the restore.

I have not seen anything on V2.4.

Is the firmware reported still 9E?

Well that's two users reporting in as having received revision 2.4 hardware produced in 2017 of the 29th week. Who want's to gamble none of them break the two year mark?!?!

That's fine - I bought the 4 year electronics replacement warranty for $5.  So, fail away!

Thank you all, the PLM replace went just fine.
It found my Zwave stuff upon re-initialization.

I had to replace the batteries in my Motion Sensor (I), and "programming mode" was just tapping the set button.

The Mini Remote was a little more complicated - Set twice on Mini Remote, then Write Updates from console, then Set again on Mini Remote.

But all in all, a lot less time than it took to diagnose.

Yes, 9E
