Support Upcoming 2410S as an alternative for IR Control

We just recently cutover an ISY 99i IR Pro with control IR input coming from Elan touchpanels and 4 Universal Rmote MX-3000s thru their MSC-400. We ran into some interesting problems with spurious IR sequences from the URC devices --- diffferent Topic. We had more than 40 IR initiated programs and had to search for more RC5 codes to be learned into the 99i.

 

My preference is to use RS-232 communications to control AV gear as it tends to be interference free from other IR sources (sunlight, Plasma and LCD flat panels, etc.). Most remote devices have programmer editable tables to control the serial data content.

 

I would love to be able to replace the IR control with serial commands using the upcoming 2410s bidirectional serial interface. I know there has been some discussion about opening up the DB9 console port on the 99i which would be fine also. Two bytes in a string would generate 65,536 codes or 256 groups with 256 commands (Fast On, Fast Off, Double Tap, etc.). More than enough for most installations.

We will surely take a look into 2410S as it becomes available. We have not yet even been notified of the availability of this item for Beta testing and, therefore, I am not sure what it entails (hopefully with a lot of documentation).

I second this. I have an A/V bridge that doesn't support communication with Insteon directly. However, the bridge does support RS232/RS485 communications. It would be nice to be able to control lighting from an A/V remote in any room of the house using a setup where the bridges exist in every room that are linked together via RS485, and Insteon communications via ISY are done through the new Smarthome device.

I'd also like to see support for the 2410s, for thermostat control in my case -- it's my one big missing item. I have Honeywell IAQ's, and quite frankly the Venstar thermostats can't come close to matching the abilities of the IAQ series (which are VERY common in higher end installations.) In my case, I have two stage heat pumps backed up by two stage gas furnaces, giving four heating stages and two cooling stages on each unit. Plus humidify/dehumidify control and outdoor air exchange.

 

The IAQ line does have a serial adapter, and there are documents out there describing its communication, so I'm hoping I will be able to make it work...
