Google Home and Alexa interact

If you have both Google Home and Amazon Alexa within hearing distance of each other this may tell you about co-operation between the companies somewhat.

"Hey Google! Talk to Alexa!"

  • "I'm so excited! I have a question for her.
  • Alexa! Will you be my friend?"

  • "Sure! I'm always happy to make new friends."

When people first experience this, it is quite freaky!!!

Cooperation between Google and Amazon? I wish.

One of the biggest things missing from the Alexa service is the power of Google's search engines. You can ask Google Home and Alexa about the same thing using the exact phraseology and Google Home blows Alexa away as far as consistent quality of results. I know healthy competition will benefit the consumer ultimately, but right now this feud between Amazon and Google is nothing but a pain for Alexa users.

Maybe,  but Google's bad attempts at AI only makes the vocal control unreliable and possibly dangerous.

"Hey Google, Turn on Louder!"

  • "OK. Turning on all 38 devices"
  • ...ding-dong, doorbell rings, as well as all lights outside and inside turn on.

When Google Home doesn't understand....it assumes, and that is unforgivable in HA". Alexa asks again with some BS excuse usually, but it doesn't try to act like Skynet.

This reminds me I better check my HRV from costing me  money to reheat fresh air coming into the house 24 x 7.

Here is another example.

  • "Hey Google. Turn on corner lamp"
  • ..."OK, turning on buffet corner light"....complete opposite end of the room  because it doesn't know about the Hue lights I have. It just makes something up that is the closest sounding. This can be dangerous.

Anybody know if Google Home has an option to turn off the "all devices" option. That seems to be the biggest danger when Google Home does not understand.

I previously named the lights in my main room as "All Lights" in Alexa. Now Google Home wants to interpret this as every device it can find. This is not something I have defined, but an assumption on Google's part.

I have since changed the name of the program to something different  from "All Lights", but we still slip up after using it for a year or so.

More info is nice. If that was my reason for a voice device, I may have chosen Google's Home. But that didn't even occur to me. My one and only reason for voice control is home automation, anything else is an extra. There may be catch-up down the line, but as far a automation is concerned, Alexa is currently the winner, most especially in the wealth of skills.

In my case, if I want to know a lot, then I read-which makes going over something considerably easier. Probably why I took notes. I'm also a Wikipedian and really enjoy Wikipedia--as a starting place. For an overview only, Amazon's Alexa is a quick solution.
