Is there a way to test the ISY side of the PLM connection? I can access the ISY admin interface but it's bringing up the In Safe Mode error.

For background, we had a lightening strike and the old PLM, a 2412s, took a hit (some of the magic smoke got let out of it). I opened it up to be sure and there were burnt tracks coming off the transformer. I've replaced the PLM with a newly ordered unit, a 2413s, but the ISY does not see it and still throws the safe mode error. I've searched through the forum and tried the procedure here as well as power cycling and different cables all to no avail. At this point I worry that the ISY994i/IR Pro may be compromised as well.

Any help is much appreciated.

I've tried it off and on. I've unplugged the ISY, plugged in the PLM and waited and then plugged the ISY back in and then every combination therein. All getting the same result.

Most probably the magic smoke got release from the serial chip inside the ISY as well. :-(

I suppose if one were so inclined, one might open the ISY, find the chip, and replace it... it's quite probable that it's a discrete chip/driver rather than being directly connected to the processor.  I've never looked for the serial chips in either of my ISYs, so can't give you any help there.

There's no diagnostic of which I'm aware.  You might open a support case with UDI to see if they have a secret command on the ISY that can confirm/deny operation of the serial port.

Unplug the ISY, unplug the plm. Factory reset the plm by holding down the set button while plugging it in. Release the set button once the buzzing stops. Once that is done, plug the ISY back in and see if it connects.

mwester - yeah I suppose talking directly with UDI is the next step really. What I thought was odd is that the fuse on the old PLM was not blown, tested for continuity with a meter. I suppose it could've passed enough current to kill the serial chip and then get damped down when the transformer went all before the fuse had a chance to blow. Lightening does do weird things.

lilyoy1 - I tried that as well, was one of the first things actually. I had such high hopes.

The fuse in the 2412S PLM only protects the unregulated 12 volts feeding the serial port. To power an external device. It does not protect the PLM's power supply or electronics. It is a 400mA fuse. The 2413S PLM has no fuses in it at all and does not provide unregulated 12 volts on the serial port connection.

I would suspect the serial chip in the iSY994i maybe damaged. Contacting UDI may provide added thing to test.

I contacted UDI Support late last night and that is pretty much what they said this morning, only in not quite as detailed a manner. I guess I should've replaced that old PLM a few years ago. Guess I'll be shopping for a new unit, though I'll still probably tear into the old one to see what can be done (the soldering station hasn't seen any love recently).
