JCPVAZ Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 With Oracle setting a timeline for abandoning Java, possibly to the public domain or just shutting it down and with only two browsers left supporting it, what is the future of ISY regarding being able to get into it and work with it? If Java blinks out or these browsers suddenly drop Java support, we will all be pretty much SOL for doing anything with out ISY units. Is there a plan to migrate to another platform?
Techman Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 UDI plans to move away from Java dependency. When that happens the ISY will be fully supported without Java.
larryllix Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 Java is independent of your browser. A browser is not required to run code in java. Browsers are dropping java plug-ins. Java is not java script that the Internet lives on. 1
mwester Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 Not to worry, Java will continue to be available on the desktop for a long, long, long time. It'll be rather like COBOL -- when the current kids who are coding in Java retire, they'll be called back to do side-jobs maintaining legacy Java applications. There are a lot of reasons for UDI to drop their Java application, but on-going support for Java isn't one of them. 1
paulbates Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 Java is a platform installed on your local computer, 1 version at a time. The admin console will continue to run on whatever version of java you have installed on your local system. To larry's point, most browsers already do not support Java. Not a problem for the ISY. The best way to run the admin console is through the ISY launcher directly from your os desktop or folder.
JCPVAZ Posted August 21, 2018 Author Posted August 21, 2018 Thanks for the replies. My thinking was a bit narrow it seems as these responses fleshed out quite a bit more from behind my question. The ISY Launcher is great and neatly bypasses the plugin. Oracle has pledged to support Java directly into 2019 and after that things are uncertain but with the Launcher it seems UD is taking the first steps to move away from the need to interface through the products of other vendors - and that's a good thing. Thanks all. 1
