Power Outage Notification

I'm exploring ways to get a notification should there be a power outage. The main purpose is get the notification of a power outage if away from home. One thought I have is to have the ISY, cable modem and router on a UPS. Then have a program that queries a Z-Wave device on a certain schedule. Should a false status be returned by the program a notification would be sent. Of course, if the power outage is affecting the ISP, this will not work. Also once the power is restored, the ISY should probably be restarted. This can be done manually. What other things should I consider? What other methods should I consider to push out a notification that there is a power outage?

Thank you!!

I gave up on that idea and went to having ISY keep track of it's last known time. Then on a power restore I notify myself with the last known time and current time.

Like Larry, I have program set to only run on startup. Among other things, it sends a notification that the ISY rebooted, which typically only happens when

  • Power out
  • I reboot the ISY Manually
  • There was a case with ISY V5 firmware where the node profile required a reboot
    • I've not witnessed this for quite some time

Below is a picture showing the SystemStartup Program I created in the Summary Tab, set to start. Since I don't have a backup power system for my house, nothing automated is going to happen when the power's down.

Note I also Disabled the program so it won't otherwise run

@paulbates and @larryllix I appreciate your information. When a device that is offline is queried manually an request failed error is generated. I was hoping there was a way that a query could be sent to a device in a program and if the device wasn't available the ISY would know and then a power outage notification could be sent from that information.

Thank you!!

If you have v5 there is a completely self-contained method of extracting the date and time from inside ISY.

dbuss,

Unfortunately, if you want the ISY to notify you of power failure/loss, it will have to be on a UPS.

I have a small UPS.  Both my DSL modem and ISY are fed from it, but not the PLM.  With that I'm able to do a variety of power loss notifications from either a Z-Wave device (Aeotec Smart Switch) or from the UPS itself.

Using the the Z-Wave Smart Switch device can report Voltage, Current, Power and more.  All it takes is a small program and voila, you have power loss notification.

My Cyberpower UPS has the ability to send emails when power is lost or interrupted.  This is by far the easiest way.

I'm also able to use my IP cameras/Blue Iris to notify me of power loss.    The cameras will individually send me a message after the fact too (when power has been restored).

@PhanTomiZ,

This is exactly the information I was looking for. I knew I would need to put the ISP equipment and ISY on a UPS. I didn't know how to go about getting the notification. Now I do.

Thank you!!

Thank you very much!!

You have an Elk panel? There’s an event that can be tracked - AC power loss in Elk rules. You can have that toggle a phantom output and the ISY can see that output in a program and take action. I recently started doing that here and it works well.

  • 3 months later...

I have an RPi that watches my internet connection and notifies me via a text message sent from a hologram nova cellar modem (40 cents a month) so it can reach me even if the internet is down. I have it talking to my ISY (which isn't battery backed up) because sometimes when the power is restored our fiber internet gateway box doesn't recover completely. I then can send a text to have the isy power cycle the fiber box remotely to get the net back up.
