Is it possible to add zwave devices to the network manually like you can with Insteon devices?

I’m thinking about adding new zwave devices, but am having flashbacks to Insteon where you had to manually go to every device and link them.  Is it possible to add zwave devices by entering their serial number?

Each Zwave device needs to manually be put into the linking mode as they don't have a unique address like Insteon does.

Each Zwave device is assigned an ID by the hub (ISY). First you set ISY to "Include" and then, as mentioned by Techman, you click on the Zwave device to activate it, which makes the hub recognizing it and assigning an ID (ZWXYZ)

How would you do this with dimmable relays behind each switch?

Add them before installing by using a pigtail or before closing up the box.

Could you add them to a makeshift power power setup, and then add them in the wall...sorta like adding a lamp module?

Yes, you can. Make sure to perform a HEAL  (Zwave - Tools - Heal Zwave Network) when the device is in its permanent location. That will optimize your Zwave mesh network.

Thanks, that makes it much easier to install than trying to activate them in the wall.
