Insteon Keypad ??

Hello all,

For those that know more than I do, this link shows that the individual is using a Insteon Keypad

to troubleshoot a noise problem.  Sadly he does not specify the actual model of the keypad.

https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=INSTEON_Signal_/_Noise_Troubleshooting

Would someone be so kind as to provide one or two choices of keypads that can be used

to diagnose a noise or signal problem.

Thanks,

Les

There are, basically, a limited number of keypads.  Besides color, you can choose dimming or relay, six button or eight.  For the purposes of troubleshooting per these linked instructions, I dont believe it matters which.

Some, but not all Insteon switches provide “blink on traffic”. You can click on each of your switches in the admin console and then click options... if the switch has this feature, there will be a check box... check it and it will be turned on.

To use it, activate a device while watching the switch with the “blink on traffic” turned in. A typical Insteon transaction will be a message when a switch is turned on, and an acknowledgment from the responder device to the original switch that the message was received. If things are healthy on your Insteon network, the responder will come on sub second, and the “blink on traffic” switch will blink 2 or 3 times in an even cadence within a couple of seconds showing the conversation.

If there are Insteon communication problems, the light will blink erratically and for 3 or more seconds; and the light will take several seconds to respond to the commanding switch.

It’s not a technical or quantitative method, but short of using level 3 event traces in the admin console, it’s what we have.

If you have a newer keypad, last ~3 years, it will have a red/green colored led. When you use the keypad, it will blink green when all responders associated with the key report back an acknowledgment, and red if any one of them didn’t. It’s great when a key is linked to one responder and maddening when many responders are linked... you have no idea which one didn’t respond. I don’t think it’s an option to be turned on or off... but it’s been a while since I looked at options.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the input.  What I was looking for was an actual part number that

would provide the "blink of traffic" functionality feature.  I presently do not have

one in the system and was looking to get one in order to do some diagnostic testing.

Thanks for any extra insight.

lilyoyo,

The diagnostic keypad that you reference as I understand it's operation the output

is audible beeps in nature.  With my high frequency hearing loss I don't feel it

will help me very much.  Think how it would be for a sound technician being deaf.

Extra challenges that I don't need.

Thanks,

Les

I looked at these on smarthome   , the 2334-2xx dimmer has both features

  • "Blink on traffic", which can be turned on under its Options in the Admin Console
  • Red/Green "Error Blink" to debug linked responders; described in the manual (pg 16): image.png.2a8a36946f11264cd23feb0f2829f08d.png

The relay (On/Off) has neither of these features. I have a newer one and just tested both.. it does not have them

In related news, smarthome is having 30% off Insteon through today (1/20)
