telljcl Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Curious if in a simple scene that includes an Insteon wall switch and 2 plug in dimmer modules - 1 Insteon Lamplinc and 1 Z-Wave lamp module, it this will work? Will holding the Insteon wall switch "dim" button dim both lamps? (guessing the dimming rate likely won't be the same...) As I understand it, a typical scene doesn't involve the ISY, only the Insteon (or Z-Wave) devices - so wondering how a scene with mixed modules would work. Have mostly insteon devices (way too many...), but looking to see viability of adding in Z-Wave devices as well. Thanks for any help!

The first part (creating and operating a scene with mix Insteon and Z-Wave) works fine. I did that last night with the same configuration as you. I didn't try the dimming operation from the switch, but I suspect that as long as you leave the responder for the Z-Wave module set to "default" (which is the default), the ISY will pass the dimming commands straight through. There's about a 0.5s delay between when the Insteon LampLinc responds and the Z-Wave module responds, but it's only obvious if you mix them like that. If I had two Z-Wave modules, it would be fine.
MWareman Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 I couldn’t get dimming to work when controlling an Aeotec dimming plug in module from an Insteon SwitchLinc dimmer. I don’t know if dimming simply is not supported cross protocol or if there is something about my combination of devices....
telljcl Posted February 2, 2019 Author Posted February 2, 2019 Thanks for the feedback. I'll need to try it out I guess, but since there is no way an Insteon controller (wall switch) can talk to a Z-Wave dimmer (plug in unit) w/out ISY somehow involved, I was wondering what would happen in that scenario.
rccoleman Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 I just tried this with a SwitchLinc, Insteon On/Off module, and GE/Jasco Dimmer module (here) in a scene together and it works fine. Holding the switch up or down dims both the switch load and Z-Wave dimmer module in sync. The "default" action in the scene basically translates into "send whatever the ISY receives", so it seems to receive the dim commands and sends them to the module.

Thanks for taking the time to run that experiment.
shpegel Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 I have a Leviton Decora Z-Wave dimmer in a scene with Insteon dimmers and am getting mixed results. The reason for this mix is that I am using Lithonia recessed LED lighting that the Insteon dimmers do not work correctly with (I'm told). ISY 994i Pro running v5.0.15 1. Insteon dimmers can turn the Z-Wave Dimmer on and off but cannot dim lights controlled by Z-Wave dimmer. 2. Z-Wave dimmer cannot effect Insteon dimmer controlled lights in any way that I can see. 3. Dimming of light controlled by Z-wave dimmer can be done from the Z-Wave dimmer only and the setting holds through off-on cycles of both Z & I dimmers. There is an option bit setting for this in the Z-Wave options. Believe it or not, this arrangement works very well for me so this post is mostly FYI. Have twiddled bits on Z-wave dimmer and Link type settings on Insteon but have yet to find a setting that gives "normal" operation. Any suggestions welcome and I will happily test and report. Glad to answer any questions about Z-Wave dimmer option setting, UDI programming, etc. Off topic: Does any one know what Option bit 0 (zero) does on the Leviton Z-Wave dimmer? It is not defined in the instruction sheet packed with the dimmer. regards, Howard
