Device Naming Conventions

Recommended Posts

I've searched and have not found anything but I'm sure this has been asked a million times.  If not I would be surprised.

What are some common name schemes for devices?  The folder view/organization within the Admin console is great but it does not carry over to the Web Admin or to Agave or Mobilinc.  This makes the folders almost useless if using those tools for view/control of devices.

There also is a limit based on length of devices being readable in the drop down menu when creating a program.  If the name including folder hierarchy is too long then it makes it hard to actually know what device you want as the end part is not readable.  This necessitates a shorter naming convention.

I'm very interested in seeing what others have come up with for organizing and naming schemes for devices when you have a decent number of devices across several rooms and some rooms being the same ie bedrooms, bathrooms.

For devices I use folders named by location/rooms.
For programs I use folders grouped by functions.

For device names I have noticed many ancillary softwares do not support the folders so I use a combination like this.

Gathering Room/GathRm.MS.motion
Recreation Room/RecRm.stat.setpoint
Lower Landing/LLand.MS.lowBatt

This is what I've noticed as well as the ISY Web interface doesn't support the folders when viewing devices.  So having same named devices but in different folders does not work well.  I've started toying with shorter names like you FR = family room, LVR = living room etc.  Just looking to see what others have when you end up with a 100+ devices I can see needing a naming scheme to keep things in order and identifiable.

There are times when Room.device.node doesn't work well.

Let's say you are on holidays and you get a notice of motion inside your house. So you connect into your ISY and want to see any MS triggering further motion. Now you have to jump from one room to another in a list sorted alphabetically. In that case, names like MS.MBR.motion work better so that all the MSes fall together when sorted alphabetically.

Of course, this can be done with programs watching the MSes sorted by function. As reported before my programs are grouped into folders by function, so a folder name "Occupancy" containing programs, monitors  devices like:
Occupancy/MS.MBR.motion
Occupancy/MS.LLand.motion
Occupancy/MS.Libr.motion
To note: these programs need to have enough time delay to show up on a remote monitoring program. I usually install a Wait 2 seconds to ensure colour changes show up remotely. As an aside, I also have a sliding variable indicating motion sequence.

Low battery signals are another one that fall into this. You get a notification that some MS battery is low (I don;t use 12 notifications). Grouping devices by LowBatt is nice at this point. I use the same program style for LowBatt (folder by function) so I can easily find the offender.

Another point is the admin console's device summary page can be sorted by any field with a single sort click on any  title. Device types sort by Insteon address quite well.

@simplextech,

UD AJAX does support folders. They look like folder icons.

With kind regards,
Michel

@Michel Kohanim in a limited fashion yes.  The "My Devices & Scenes" and "My Programs" show the folders.  BUT the "My Devices" and "My Scenes" does not and it's just everything in a big list with no organization.  The interface is inconsistent.
