Scenes can do all that, setting can vary for each device, but they will also control the off and dimming for the other switches also.

Unless I need the response speed or the easy control of a huge quantity of devices, I avoid use of scenes.

Interesting. I've been using ISYs for years, but I'm still a novice. My preference of automation goes from:

  1. Controlling the load with the switch/dimmer
  2. A scene
  3. A program
  4. Anything that requires the internet

My thought was always to go from least complicated to most complicated. Or most reliable to least. If I lose the internet, down one level. Lose the ISY, down another, etc. That way I retain the most functionality when things start going wrong. Plus, there's the speed issue you mentioned.

I guess my philosophy is different. I just did three new setups (one very large) so I hope I don't have a fundamental misunderstanding about scenes. I don't see the disadvantage of using them.

There's really no right or wrong way to do things. My philosophy is similar to yours. I use scenes for everything and let programs add additional functionality to them. It's not just the speed that scenes execute but the way devices respond in sync.

I prefer the security of devices given retries and reporting status changes upon comm problems. I could have stuck with X10 otherwise and assumed success.

I like the control of being able to see what controls what easily, and make changes that ISY program control offers.

I like the ability to use conditional logic to change the brightness level and controlling the time off based on other conditions.

I like to use HA, as well as RC so I got an ISY.

I certainly use Insteon scenes, but then I have to block MS off commands and find ways to block switches from operating linked devices in ways I don't want them to.

I have very few Insteon devices directly operating other Insteon devices and the list grows by using other technologies.

I do the same with wireless devices. I've always kept sensors separate as I like the amount of options I have with them by using programs. Remotes I always used programs so I wouldn't have to put it in linking mode. That's mitigated now with the ISYs ability to write updates after using it but since I only have 1 now it's become a moot point.
