New home prewire costs

Hi,

Building a new home. Walked through the house with my contractors low voltage guy last week and just got his proposal.

It exceeded my budget by more than 100%.  Trying to figure out if it is reasonable and I need to cut back some items or it's over priced.

Here are some typical prices:

- TV drop - Cat 6 and RG6U - $140

- Audio Zone Pair Drop - Ceiling 16/2 - $150

- Motion Sensor Drop - 22/4 - $25

- All other windows, doors, keypads, siren - $650

- Wireless Access Point drop - CAT 6 - $75

- POE Camera Drops  - Cat 5 - $85

- 7.1 prewire - 16/2 - $400

FYI house is on the east coast of Florida in case costs are regional. House is almost a 2 story cube and network/security closet is in the second floor in the center.  Floor is all 2' open web trusses, so not much drilling.

Not sure what to say, except that’s certainly cheaper than doing it after it’s finished. Have you priced out the cable you would need to DIY? Even if that’s not an option, at least you would have a sense for reasonableness. My gut says that bid is not unfair but I’ve never actually had this job bid for me.

Seems reasonable but you don’t specifically say how many wires are being dropped “all other windows”.

Edit: I would ask why its $75 CAT6 vs $85 CAT5 for literally the same drop. Are you sure you don’t have this reversed?

I would also check to see if it's standard cat6 or cat 6a. Personally I go with cat 6a over cat6. I also recommend using solid copper rg6 vs copper clad

There are 34 window/door contacts, 2 keypads and 1 siren.

I don't have the prices reversed.  I was confused like you.

Maybe he has to go buy CAT5 wire specially, instead of using his 100,000' spool of CAT6 he already owns. The prices look semi-reasonable to what I would expect, but I would install it myself. You would just need a few special wire staplers, some lumber and nails, and some outlet vapour proofed boxes with plates, or plaster rings.

Prices are fair. Like lilyoyo says just have em use Cat6 - thats said I wouldn’t worry about type. If you wanna get crazy spend more for shielded.
