JTsao Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 I have a house full of Insteon switches with a few z-wave locks, sirens and on-off modules. I have been trying to get away from battery powered solutions like the insteon motion sensor (old version). I have been using a regular motion sensor (Topgreener brand) with an Insteon micro on-off module as an in-wall motion sensor with some mixed results and was investigating an in-wall z-wave motion sensor switch. Does anyone know if the GE/Jasco Motion Switches (Z-wave plus models) work well with the ISY? If so, do they support a "smart mode", where motion is reported to the ISY, and then the ISY can send a command to turn on the lights? (In other words, don't autonomously turn on lights because I might as well get a standalone motion switch)? I see this "smart mode" feature in the Homeseer, outdoor style motion sensor, HL-FS100+ and I really don't want any device that would not defer control to the ISY. Thanks in advance for your help-
jec6613 Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 I'm not sure about that particular solution, but in my move away from battery devices I went with some Insteon MS2's, and ran USB power to them. This means I can keep the MS where it makes sense and not at the switch, and it work really well outdoors especially where battery life would tend to be shorter. I still have battery powered leak sensors though, those things last for years and years it seems, my oldest one is 4 years old, still has its original battery, and the battery tests as though it were new on my tester.
JTsao Posted July 21, 2019 Author Posted July 21, 2019 In some cases, the wall switch location works well for a motion sensor and not having to replace batteries becomes an attractive option - there has never been an Insteon version of an in-wall motion switch - I ended up buying and installing the GE motion switch and this is working much better than the previous method.
larryllix Posted July 21, 2019 Posted July 21, 2019 I use most of my MSes in bedrooms but the best location is over the head of the bed so it doesn't get your bed movements until you stand up, or kick your feet up. The battery problem is a PITA and with Insteon 9v types the battery snaps are going to break sooner or later.
jhimmel Posted July 28, 2019 Posted July 28, 2019 I use these to eliminate batteries on my Insteon motion sensors - https://www.amazon.com/9-Volt-Battery-Universal-Adapter-120VAC/dp/B07JH9D8FT/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=9v+battery+ac+adapter&qid=1564322412&s=gateway&sprefix=9v+batter+ac&sr=8-3
lancelot Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 I too have a mix of Insteon and ZWave devices and have the GE motion switch installed in the garage, boiler room and basement and they are great. I have a simple program to alert me when the motion is ON and yes you can create a scene to control either Insteon/Zwave devices. They are especially convenient in our Summer Home when we're not there we know when service was done on the heating/ac plus the lights don't stay on forever.
