Sean J Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Hello fellow nerds, I'm a proud new owner of a second hand Kamado Joe Smoker/Grill and I see that companies have produced temperature controllers for these things that consist of a control unit some braided metal temp probes (one for pit temp and up to three for meat temps) and a tiny 12v blower fan that attaches to the bottom intake vent of the smoker. When the temperature is getting too low it brings on the fan (slowly for small temp variations up to full blast for larger) to keep the temp steady for a long low and slow cook that you dont have to watch all the time and manually adjust vents all night. The particular device I am referring to is the Flame Boss 500 that goes for $350. I thought hmm.. maybe something similar could be done through my ISY. Any thoughts? Thanks Sean J
gregkinney Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Well if that's not just the coolest thing ever. I have no doubt it could be done. The uphill battle would be finding a variable speed fan to fit the grill (I'm not sure how you would control it) and smart meat thermometers that had an API or some sort of json or xml status page that you could query to get the values into your ISY. Then, unless they already sell them, you would have to fashion clips to mount the fan to the grill. And this wouldn't include the LCD screen that one has or the fancy-pants app with charts and graphs.
gregkinney Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Good news - looks like the good folks over at www.fireboard.com have the full array of BBQ accessories you're looking for as well as an API. Whatever status updates or control they offer via the API can be integrated into your ISY!
simplextech Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Just now, gregkinney said: Good news - looks like the good folks over at www.fireboard.com have the full array of BBQ accessories you're looking for as well as an API. I was wondering if anyone cared to have it brought to ISY looks like maybe at least one person

Currently the API (last I checked) only provided status. I've had talks with the FireBoard guys about control options but nothing has happened around that yet. A customer I developed this for uses it a lot for voice announcements of temp status and flashing lights when things are done.... kinda fun
Sean J Posted August 13, 2019 Author Posted August 13, 2019 Thanks Greg! I'm doing some research on the FireBoard now. Looks like a really cool option that I wasn't aware of. May just be what the doctor ordered ? And Simplextech, that plugin that you created sounds pretty neat too! It would be cool if they would do something for control options. ?
simplextech Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I just discovered this tonight! https://meater.com/ I've contacted them to find out if there's an API... if there is I'm getting one to integrate! 1
Sean J Posted August 14, 2019 Author Posted August 14, 2019 Interesting product. Totally wireless probe. Thank's
