RofS Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 Hi guys! I'm a novice in Z-wave, but so far have 3 powered switches, 4 Schlage locks and 3 binary battery-powered sensors on my Z-wave network. I want to install outdoor flood lights with motion sensors on them. If I put them on a Z-wave switch, when they come on due to the motion sensor, will they switch to "on" in my network so that I can program other actions?
jec6613 Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 Some switches may be able to do a load sense action, but the Z-Wave switch itself will need to be on already in order for them to work at all. Rather than do that, why not just pick up the HomeSeer motion detector and wire them into your existing floods (or other dumb floods)? This provides the switching for the lights, a motion sensor, and you can constantly reprogram the behavior based on conditions, and you get full reports on what everything is doing. You can even make one flood light's motion sensors not turn on the attached lights but instead perform a completely different action.
Mecheng70 Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 I used a monoprice motion sensor with a light attached to a zwave switch. Created a program that turned the zwave switch on for 4 minutes when the motion sensor triggered. So yes, it is doable. Also had a motion sensor in my living room that between 11pm and sunrise, if there was any motion then it would turn the kitchen dimmer to 15% for 4 minutes.
oberkc Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 While there are some z-wave devices that do not report their status when toggled, you are talking about a different case. If you have a motion sensor which triggers a scene or a program via the ISY-994, then the ISY knows that the scene/program was triggered and would assume that the responders (z-wave switch, in this case) is on, since the ISY initiated the command. As a point for comparison, I have an insteon switch that is scene controller for a z-wave switch. When I toggle the insteon switch, the Z-wave switch responds and the ISY knows about it, showing the latest accurate status for the z-wave switch. Know, also, that some z-wave switches (mine included) that have the limitation of being unable to trigger a program from a "control" condition, but can from a "status" condition.
MWareman Posted August 26, 2019 Posted August 26, 2019 I have a couple of Ring Floodlights - and via the Ring PolyglotCloud plug-in (requires ISY Portal). I’ve been able to zone out motion detection zones around my house and have the ISY trigger on it - and it ignores motion outside of the configured detection areas.Bonus is the cloud recorded video of the events.Negative is it’s cloud dependency.Personally, the benefits far outweigh the negative. It’s been fantastic so far...
