larryllix Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 I believe WiFi will disappear as 5G gets into home devices with it's lower energy consumption possibilities, due to lower latency offering shorter transmission times the circuits have to be awake for.

I don't see that happening any time soon. The only way I see that happening is if "private" 5g networking becomes a thing where people switch from regular wifi to a wifi that includes a 5g radio. As the article points out, there is little chance that 5g will become ubiquitous. So if you sell a smart device that uses 5g, it won't work in many/most places. Just look at lte, it is far from uquitous and that tech is easier to implement (more widely spaced towers). And in less populated areas, lte isn't available at all even though the technology has been around for years already. I see 5g as being something that is a "bonus" for most people. For most people, for many years to come, a 5g connection will be a pleasant surprise, not the norm.
Mustang65 Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 I don't see 5G taking off in my lifetime, maybe my kids. Of course then comes 6G, 7G, 8G+..................

As this series of articles in the Wall Street Journal (there are more articles....) shows, there are numerous obstacles for a fast and wide deployment of 5G. However I believe that developers will come up with specific quick uses of 5G, in the home, in commercial buildings and who knows where. Other countries, including China, are ahead of us and my bet is on being surprised by the ingenuity of some fast & smart thinking people.
firstone Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 I'm super skeptical at this point. There's a video around demonstrating how 5G is super sensitive to obstructions. The guys opens and closes glass door and signal strength drops to almost 0. And due to frequencies it's not going to be an easy obstacle to overcome. So while 5G might be deployed in major cities within couple of years, I bet it's going to fallback to 4G a lot.

WiFi has been advancing in leaps and bounds and the thought of home terabps bandwidths appeals to almost everybody with all the steaming UHD video going on. 10Mbps wired Ethernet didn't last long, once better was available.
lilyoyo1 Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 I don't see it either....at least in the next 5+10 years. Looking at the rollout here in Charlotte and California, they are treating 5g as something different....including the prices that come with it. Due to the internet speeds available now and most people being willing to settle for "good enough", I'm hard pressed to see 5g growing the way the media and telcos try to claim. While prices will drop, I just can't imagine enough will want to pay extra just for a little more when there are other options

However, it's currently being treated as an additional cost item vs getting 5g because your phone is capable of it
