Motion Sensor II - Right Angle (White) USB Cable

Has anyone found a source for the right angle USB cable for the Motion Sensor II?? Smarthome has one and given the crazy shipping and exchange rate the $4.99 USD ends up being (almost) $42.XX for a freaking cable: https://www.smarthome.com/usb-power-cable-for-insteon-motion-sensor.html

More specifically I'm looking for a white cable as the black one's are easily found.

For those unaware the micro USB jack to supply power to the motion sensor II is upside down so don't purchase the wrong one! I am currently working toward replacing lots of older hardware and in doing so have decided to move away from direct battery powered units. The bulk of the sensors will be home run into a powered USB Hub which will be UPS powered so no worries about power blip.

I got the Insteon one from aartech.ca. it is only 2m long but the only one I have ever found that would work.

Yeah. The can come with four different angles and the popular arlo webcams are the opposite angle. Grrrrrrrr. Insteon does it again. I can even smell bits of Apple on the cable. :)

I have seen a few cables with very short straight in plugs on them and some day will try to bend a flat cable type very sharply to do the measurement.

For now I am just thinking of aartech.ca with their $10 shipping and a white USB female to make extension.

If I don't get any hits from here I'll break down and just purchase the black ones on line. Just rather not have to cover up / paint the cable to blend into the surrounding area. On a side note will go with a smaller powered hub that has individual On / Off buttons for long term maintenance which is more centralized. This will help me reduce the home runs in the basement while ensuring voltage drop is less of an issue.

If you get a hot on black once that have the correct angle (I see some calling it "upper"and "lower "angle") I would appreciate a link. I spent many hours searching amazon and ebay to no avail. I did find some adapters but wasn't sure of the correct angle when I was shopping.

I didn't need the plug that goes to the sensor to be very long from the start. All of them will be plugged into 30 ~ 45 feet male to female extensions. The only reason for it being white was to reduce the need to cover the cable or paint it to match the surrounding area.

I just did some mental math and will need five in my basement which will all be home run into a powered (switched) hub. I'll need to get a little creative this spring to run the same extension cables through the attic so it can run along the eve troughs.

For the basement I won’t need to worry about clips for the bulk of the wiring as all of the cables will run through a wiring trough.

Those that run through the attic I’ll need to make a dedicated path so none of the wiring gets damaged.

The next step is to finalize a 3D printed housing for a custom LED flood light I’m designing to hold a standard motion sensor, 4K camera, speaker, and the Insteon motion sensor II.

This hobby is nothing but a money pit and time suck!

All of these Motion Sensor II are just being mounted in the unfinished basement in the different rooms / zones. None of mine are being run under any window, doors, cabinets at all. The primary reason is to reduce the long term costs for A123 cells and the never ending replacement process. The secondary reason is being able to use the temperature feature of this new sensor. I also wanted a physical way to manage these sensors to take them out of the network remotely should the need arise. Using a managed & powered USB hub this will allow me to do so.

The link you provided looks like the Micro USB plug is facing the wrong direction (sideways) vs upside down - Intentional??

I'd just seen all sorts of comments about running lamp cord through the walls, opening usb chargers and soldering, removing them from cases to tuck in side of outlets, running long cords, etc.  I'm planning on using them out in living areas and bathrooms to control lighting and fans mostly, possibly blinds, there's also the repeating function, and there is the spousal acceptence factor to consider.  Not to mention that there is never an outlet where you want it.  Just seemed that poe would be a good solution.  Direction of the plug? We'll see.  There are two adapters come with it.  Due in the end of the week.  With you on the batteries.  Not a fan of ANYTHING battery powered.   I've got one plugged into a usb charger to play with right now and already got the evil eye from the wife.....  Of course her comment was "you're not putting a camera in the bathroom"....

I’ve seen quite a few hacks over the years and the bulk of them are truly disasters waiting to happen. I can easily admit doing a few hacks myself for short term testing in a isolated area.

Regardless, those days are behind me and try very hard to use the correct tools when and where needed even if it initially costs more.

Because in the end cheaping out always costs you more down the line. With respect to POE I agree using this technology when and where you can solves many problems with respect to wiring and power distribution.

I have three 500 watt 48 Port POE switches getting ready to be deployed in the coming months. They will be tasked to power many devices throughout the home from phones, cameras, sensors, keypads, and IoT.

Lastly, over the last eight years I’ve been pushing hard to use rechargeable cells coupled to solar when possible. The most difficult hardware to do the same are those using round button coin cells!

Awesome small form factor but next to impossible to replace with renewable energy without breaking open the casing and incorporating hacker PSU’s to offer the same.

Let us know how your POE starts solution goes once installed!

If the POE splitters I have coming don't fit there are some that terminate in a female USB.  I could always go to that and use the factory cable that came with them.  That would just mean having 6' if USB cable wadded up near the device.

Well, all of the micro usb splitters I got had one thing in common, the plug was still just too big to fit into the sensor.  So, I have some splitters ordered that terminate in female USB so I could just use the factory cable and plug it into the splitter.  BUT!!!  Then I found this:   https://imgur.com/a/rB68g  .  I find it SUPER interesting.  ESPECIALLY when you follow to one of the last pictures where the entire assembly fits INTO the sensor!  Somewhere I think I still have a box of 2 pair phone wire. I'm now thinking a 24vdc poe injector, that box of phone wire, and a hand full of these little buck converters........

Thoughts?  Also, I've noticed, a lot of these conversations are a few years old.  Good and bad experiences that may have been had might make it easier for some of us that are just getting there....

That was a pretty slick solution implemented there. It really comes down to environmental & personal choice as to what route to follow regarding power.

 

I chose my power solution based on having the ability to manage each sensor independently for long term maintenance. While not impacting my network infrastructure and keeping things isolated and contained.

 

PSU & Converters: Offers lots of choices in terms of cost, size, electronic options. But requires planing, research, and DIY.

 

POE: Easy to implement and deploy as much of the cabling and power is standardized. Still requires planning, research, as you saw with the plug.

 

USB Hub: This is the epitome of (P&P) Plug & Play. Really comes down to how many ports, output power, and managed vs unmanaged. I went this route because of its simplicity, ability to scale, and manageability. No DIY hacking involved and easily passes all building codes with respect to fire / electrical compliance.
