Another- "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" thread

One of my Keypads died and now I am trying to install a new one. It is hard to determine the address, with a magnifying glass it looks like; 4D.38.EF. When I try to add the device, after about 2 seconds it gives me the message it can't add the device due "Cannot determine Insteon Engine". If I put in the address: 40.38.EF, it takes about 7 seconds before I get the same error. I have tried using the auto detect for the device and I have tried selecting the device, a 2334-2 Keypad 5 button. Any idea's what else I should check before I call this new keypad DOA?

Thank you

Can you post a picture of the device address?

Not sure what you are asking for. The device address is shown in the "New Device Errors" window.

Correct, I should have been more clear and asked that you provide the Insteon address on the white sticker.

Please post a picture of the white sticker on the device with the address.

That will take a few minutes to get and will be hard to read. The new stickers are much harder to read than the old ones.

Hope you can read this, I had to resize it to upload.

Yes, the address is definitely 4D.38.EF but you could try 4D.3B.EF just in case. If that doesn't work hard reset the new device as outlined in the full users manual. Once done I want you to wire that new KPL to an extension cord. Once wired to a long cord I want you to plug it into the same outlet as the 2413S PLM.

Than, try to add the new KPL . . .

I tried 4D.3B.EF.... same results. It will take me a while to find the necessary bits and pieces to hook it up to an extension cord.

I tried to do a factory reset, I suspect the unit is DOA. When I pushed in the SET button,  after pulling it out for at least 10 seconds, I got the long beep, but when I released the SET button I got a funny sound, the ON and the 4 other buttons flashed at normal illumination levels and then the ON button came on dim, all other buttons not illuminated.

Make sure you’re following the correct full users manual for your model hardware as there are slight differences as to what is seen and heard while completing the hard reset.

Go pick up a box of Wago nuts to make your life easier to make this:

We have success. I have 6 flouresent light fixtures in the same room with the new keypad. I have had issues with them in the past interfering with the Insteon signal and I have put filters on them. Apparently that was not enough as after I turned the lights off.... I was able to add the new keypad and then I was able to replace the old keypad with the new one in the ISY. Still need to go out to the shop to see if the new keypad truly works as programed.

I may have spoke too soon, keypad is not controlling the lights. I will need to check my programing to see if the new keypad properly replaced the old keypad in my programs/scenes.

Is the kpl controlling the lights directly or linked to another device that controls the lights?

If directly, make sure you're not using a dimmer with fluorescent bulbs. Keep in mind as bulbs age, they put out more noise which can cause issues.

KPL is controlling a relay module that controls the lights.

Looking at the Admin Console under the MAIN tab I see the following for the new KPL, not sure what the green icons for the Shop KyPd represent. Is it still trying to write the new keypad? Did it get hung up?

Yes, just right mouse click and select write.

I did the 'right' click and selected write. It got partway thru writing and then a "can't connect with device" error. I will make jumper and plug in same outlet as PLM as suggested earlier. Hope to have jumper made after a buy some parts tomorrow.

I would encourage you to remove the other bulbs or shut off the breaker to that offending circuit.

Than, complete the enrolment process. You’ll really need to address this noise maker / signal sucker from your system. As it will always be something impacting your Insteon network.

What make / model of filter did you install and where was it placed?

The filters I am using for the lights are the Smarthome plug-in FilterLink #1626-10. The keypad and lights in question are in my shop that is about 130ft from my house.

- I made up a cheater cord so I could plug in the keypad next to the PLM in my house and plugged it in.

- Launched Admin Console and there was an error message it couldn't connect with the keypad.

- I did a hard factory reset on the keypad and then did a "Restore Device". That seemed to work and now AC was showing it had found keypad and there were updates to be written.

- I did the "write updates to device" and now, based on the indicator lights on another keypad in the house... it looks like the new keypad is working. Now to install it in the shop and verify.

- New keypad installed in shop and all seems to be working properly.

Thank you all.
