Z-wave secondary controller

Upgrade instructions always say "Shift primary control to a secondary controller"

What's a cheap way to get a secondary controller in place? I think I technically have one with my harmony hub, but it seems very limited in functionality. I'm currently running polyglot on a raspberry pi - would getting a cheap usb z-wave dongle and setting up the Pi to be a secondary controller work? If so, what are the recommended software packages to use? I've been using the ISY for close to 10 years now, but just recently started utilizing z-wave stuff, so it's pretty new to me. I really only care about the secondary controller as a means of backup - so any other benefits (performance, automatic failover, etc.) that might be provided are just a bonus.

Using a secondary controller is only for specific reasons not just because. Those instructions were only to upgrade the firmware on the 300 series zwave board when it first came out. Since then it's been irrelevant. Others may use it as a secondary controller for specific cases such as them using a zwave alarm system and want to add the isy functionality to it.

You don't need to shift to a secondary controller unless you are upgrading the Z-Wave dongle's firmware. This should not be necessary as I believe there was only one upgrade, years ago, for the 300-series dongle and no newer upgrades available for the 500-series dongle.

That said, I would still be leery of trying the shift. Several years ago, I tried shifting my ISY 300-series dongle's primary to a Z-Stick. Once there, I was never able to shift it back. Finally, I reset the dongle and rebuilt the Z-Wave portion of my system. It is a distant but painful memory.

Since then, my ISY dongle has changed to 500 series as has the ISY software so all of this may work perfectly now but I would certainly, IMHO,  recommend using the 500-series dongle and having good dongle and ISY backups before doing this.
