Smarthome killed the Leak Sensor!

I have 10 rev 2.0 sensors. When they detect water, the status goes ON. When the water is removed and dry, the status goes OFF by itself.

These new sensors only go on and never go off when dry. It seems you have to press the set button to get them to toggle back to the off state.

Smarthome says it's because they can't have responders turning water back on when dryness is detected for "security" reasons to which I replied what moron would directly link a leak sensor to a responder rather than going through a program.

So now all 5 have to go back to Amazon and I'll need to scavenge Rev 2.0 sensor from ebay.....unless someone knows a trick to fixing the 3.0 so they work properly?

This has been like that for years. Nothing new and gives instructions in the manual.

Whoever gave you the reason gave incorrect information. The reason the make you tap the set button is to ensure that you've taken the time to address the situation. Should the sensor get knocked over during a leak or the water pool away from it, you could potentially have an unresolved issue that causes damage.

While not great for some people, in today's world of litigation, they felt it necessary to protect themselves.

I have a mixture of both.  I've had 3 leaks and not due to a pipe rupture, but rather from having the sensor too close to a drain in which someone had emptied ice in the sink and the corresponding condensation dripped down causing an alarm.  Every time this has happened, it's ruined the sensor.  Even cleaning, drying and dropping in rice would not bring them back.

With the non-latching, you have to adjust your program so that you get a "one-shot".  So if you get a water leak, you don't get the ON OFF ON etc....situation.

With the latching, it can be a pain if it's buried somewhere, but then again, the ideal situation is that you don't have water leaks.

AFAIC, either is ok with me.  Now if you have plenty of leaks and these sensors are tucked away somewhere, then I can see your point

Had I NOT discovered this and just blindly added these and a leak occurred, then I would never have known I needed to hit the reset button as my program is triggered to activate when the leak is detected but these now work as if they continually detect a leak when they're not really.

This completely removes functionality that previously existed with no way around it.

Well, once triggered (water leak), you have to go to the area and do a cleanup.  Then you'll have to assess the functionality of the sensor and put it back in service once you're done your cleanup.  At that point, you reset the device.

What's even more messed up, is that if the sensor is in the ON state and you reset your ISY, there's no status. The sensor IS in the on state but you have no clue what it is so now you have to go toggle it a few times to get the status and make SURE it's in the off state. It's TOTALLY screwed up!

It's in the manual as well

Right. I'm just pointing out had I not known this was a change, I would not have known I needed to reset the sensor and would have been in a state that had a serous damage causing leak started, the sensor would NOT have detected it. There's no way way to justify that this is a good change.

It's NOT in the manual. I don't make a habit of reading the manual for extra copies of devices that I already own. Now had they called this a different kind of sensor or changed the model number, then I would have looked at the manual.

I'm not following. If you dont tap the sensor it'll always show as wet setting off whatever you have written to alert you. The reset is only there so that it reports dry

Understood.  Unfortunately, updates are not always communicated to the end user.  This is where a forum like this, is worth the time and effort.

So apparently I already own one of these and didn't realize it. Last year I bought one and put it behind my built in refrigerator after the ice supply line sprung a leak. Well it's in the ON position now and it probably has been like that since I installed it since I pressed the button to trigger the program and left it in the ON state. Had there been a leak, it would have never been detected. Now with the skirt removed, I can see it all the way back there and I can tell it's bone dry.

Does anyone know a way to reset this remotely? Otherwise I'll have to pull it out which is about 90 minute process.

Actually it is....Direct from the QSG that comes with the sensor

The point is that the program is triggered on the sensor sends an ON. If it's already on, the program doesn't doesn't trigger.

What is a QSG? And re-read my post. I don't RE-READ manuals for products that I already own, have lots of, and have used for years.

The guide is the paperwork that comes with all insteon products sold. It's your right to use something without reading the manual. However, you miss out on pertinent helpful information. At that point it's on you not the mfg.

Like I said, I've read the manual for the product. I just didn't re-read it every time I ordered an extra sensor.

I left 1 star review on Amazon along with others that had the exact same complaint.

The whole point of a leak detector is to get you to look at the water damage location and then you are on site anyway.

If the site is remote and you get someone else to do it, it may be nice for it to reset itself.  This way you can confirm it has been looked after and you don't have to explain to someone how to reset it.

It could also confirm that they've really looked at it. There's 2 sides of the argument and I understand both. However from a company's perspective, they decided to err on the side of caution and protect themselves.

I have both styles of leak sensors.  I don't personally care if they reset or not on their own, but it did cause me a bit of confusion when I got the newer ones.  I didn't read the instructions either.

I think the arguments of legal liability for Smarthome show a lack of knowledge of consumer products law. More likely that they engineered the product to act appropriately to its task, in there opinion.

Why not always default to user configurable?!?
