How best to replace a dead motion sensor (2842-222)?

One of my motion sensors, an original 2842-222 (4414 rev. 2.4) seems to have given up the ghost after some years outside at the end of my driveway.  Its not controlling the floodlights its supposed to and not communicating with the ISY (the AC is showing a red stop sign symbol for all three nodes).  Replacing the battery, putting it in "setting" mode, trying to link/relink it with the AC all fail, even though the red motion detection LED works fine, and it goes into the semi-rapid blinking mode after holding the set switch.  Anything else that I should try?  I have a spare motion sensor and can use it to replace the bad one if necessary, but there doesn't seem to be any option for substituting in the new one for the old one in scenes or programs:  Since the old one isn't communicating with the ISY, the menu option "replace xx.yy.zz with .... doesn't appear with the bad sensor (I presume because the ISY would need to read the link table of the old sensor while writing these to the link table in the replacement sensor?).  Anything else I should try, before biting the bullet and simply starting all over putting the new sensor into the various scenes and programs the old one sensor was in?

Hmm....my motion sensor issue is more complicated:  The motion sensor IS communicating with and controlling the floodlight switch (a Togglelinc) (years ago, when I first installed this MS, I directly linked it to the Togglelinc to get a faster response of the floodlights turning on).  Motion in from of the MS does turn on the floodlights.  However motion does not activate another light activated via an ISY program with the MS in the IF clause (which had been working perfectly well for years.)  So only the communication or links between the MS and the ISY seem to be the problem.   A further odd clue or complication is that the floodlight Togglelinc switch had also glitched around the same time - the AC had the red exclamation point for this switch and it wasn't working with any programs.  This is an older (8+ years) Togglelinc and I've had this problem before.  In the past, I've just done a factory reset at the switch (pull the set button out, wait 10 seconds, push the set button all the way in and hold until the tone stops), then do a "restore device" from the AC.  Which I did this evening before venturing out to the end of my long driveway to retrieve the MS.   I didn't think a factory reset, then restore from the AC would be able to fix direct links between the Togglelinc and the MS?    I'm thoroughly confused as to what has happened or how to fix it.

 Duh, a silly mistake: the red stop sign to the left of a device in the AC means “disabled” ; a red exclamation point means “can’t communicate “.  Clicking on “enable”  in the drop down menu for the MS and everything is working again.  Sometimes one gets so far down in the weeds that you can’t see the forest!   However I still do have a couple of technical questions:   (1) Can the ISY disable a device on its own?  I don’t believe I disabled the MS while trying to diagnose the problem. (2) Does the ISY keep track of the entire link table in a device, including direct links between the device and a sensor?   So that using the AC to “restore device” on a factory reset device will restore even such direct device to sensor links?

I've never seen a device disabled on its own by the isy but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've noticed that sometimes programs have been changed so I would say it's possible (though improbable). Most likely it's inadvertent user error. 

As long as the ish was used to link 2 devices together, it is aware of the other link. You can factory reset a device and then restore it without issue. When it comes to battery operated devices, they need to be in linking mode during the restore process
