Good morning,  

I have a Insteon 2472DWH that I have lost the key to.   I want to just switch a load on and off do I need a "dimmer key' or as the name implies is that only needed is I want to dim the lamp.

Yes. The 2472 will not work at all without the key

It is a magnet in the key that you put on to the device plugged to it.

You can tape a magnet over the area where the key normally activates the outlet to operate.

Keep in mind, if the load it's not dimmable, you can potentially have a hazardous situation on your hands

If you want to go safely. Smarthome has the 2472DK replacement key showing as in stock. $1.99 but I suspect shipping will make it a much more costly purchase.
