Is my ISY dead?

After years of rock solid reliability from my ISY-994i, today I noticed none of my devices were responding.  After close inspection, there is no activity on any of the front lights of the ISY, however I do see a blue network activity light in the rear.   I’ve tried power cycling, unplugging/replugging to no avail…. Any thoughts?

Here's a few things you can try:

1. Check the ISY power supply

2. In the admin console under tools, check PLM  and SYSTEM status

3. Remove the SD card, clean the contacts with a soft eraser and reinsert.

When you rebooted the ISY did the front panel lights show activity?.

Is the ISY power light on?

#2 above will give you a good idea if its the PLM <Tools> <Diagnostics> <PLM Info / Status>, if the PLM is not showing as "Connected", then check the cable between the PLM and your ISY (swap it out with a known good one, standard cat5/6 cable), if the cable is good then unfortunately your in need of a new PLM.

That's a whole other conversation.

Unfortunately I cannot get into the admin console because the ISY cannot be found.  There is no activity on any of the front lights, however I do see a blue blinking light near the network port in the rear.  The PLM is not the issue, it’s definitely the ISY itself.  I’m thinking if it was a bad power supply I wouldn’t see the network light blinking, unless it’s possibly undervolting?

If you have any comparable power supplies lying around try switching it out.

When you reboot the ISY do you get any activity on the front panel leds?

No activity whatsoever on any of the front panel LED’s.  Only the network LED on the rear…

I'm not clear from your reply, have you tried a new (known working) power supply? There have been some reports of power supplies failing.

I’ll try to find another power supply today.  Do you happen to know the voltage, polarity, etc?  Thanks for your help!

From the Wiki:

  • Only Power Light Is On:
    • Most probably power supply related. You can try any power supply that outputs anywhere between 5 volt and 30 volts, center positive, 2mm barrel connector

This most definitely sounds like a bad power supply, and there was an apparent bad batch of them shipped at some point, because it's not uncommon for users to report the power supply replacement solved the issue.

The good news is you can use a WIDE variety of power supplies.

Thanks, I’ll give this a shot.  In my case however, the power light is not on, only a small blue LED near the rear network port is illuminated.  Crossing my fingers anyway…

I read too fast, I see you stated that now, but I read it the other way the first time... but if the power light on the front is NOT on that is also indicative of a bad power supply.  The blue LED on the front is pretty much attached directly to the power entry point.

You’ve given me hope ?

Fortunately I happened to have an old power supply from my I SY-99 and low and behold my ISY-994 came back to life!  What a relief.…

Thanks so much for all your help!

Awesome! Make sure you mark it well or toss it, cut the cord off or whatever after a proofing period.

The ISY994i has a wide range of voltages it can accept,

5 to 30 volts.. My ISY99i was 5V .5A. I have two ISY994i. One was 5 volts .5A and the other was 5V 1A. UDI sells a replacement it is 12 V 1A last time I looked.

Others have also had there supplies go bad. Two of mine did.

I forgot to mention that ever since I purchased my ISY-994i new, the barrel connector for the power supply fits extremely loose and the same is true for both power supplies so it must be an issue with the female connector inside the ISY.  If I don’t keep a little sideways tension on the cord, the connection breaks and it looses power.  Not ideal…

There was a time period where the connector was a different pin size.

They do make an adapter. 2.5mm to 2.1mm and a 2.1 to 2.5mm pin. Depending om which way you have to go.

If it is loose My thoughts are the supply has a 2.5mm center pin socket and the ISY994i has a 2.1MM pin.

Thanks for the info.  For now it seems to be working, so I’ll just keep me eyes on it...

...or the other way around? Too bad they make two different barrel connectors so similar in size. IIRC I have been caught on that one elsewhere.

Memory here. I  believe for a time they had 5.5mm barrel and 2.5mm pin.

All of mine are the 5.5mm barrel and 2.1mm pin.

If you took one from another ISY994i and it was one of the ones with the 2.5mm pin. Using it on a 2.1mm pin would be sloppy and maybe exhibit what you are experiencing.

Oh yeah. I guess I have it backwards. I was thinking the smaller spec number was the length of the barrel. Only the last few months I have discovered it is OD / ID. Now I agree with your earlier statement. doh!

Thanks for the wake-up.
