TJF1960 Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 Success, finally. For the last few months I have had comm issuses with insteon signals. I narrowed down which two braches of the AC mains panel was the worst for signals. Killed all breakers except for the branch IoP was on and the two offender branches. I unplugged everything that was on those two branches except for a switchlink on each branch. I found two offenders (and yep, I checked the Chamberlin garage door first but it wasn't on that branch), I found when I disconnected the Krueg coffee machine that signal on that branch improved to the point the switchlink operated but with only 1 hop left. But it didn't improve the other branch. With everything disconnected on the other branch I went around checking outlets that might be on that branch. Found an outdoor outlet with a little tiny 5-volt wall wort power supply powering a 1 year old Wansview outdoor cam. I thought no way but disconnected it and wham, comms on both branches instantly went back to the standard 2 hop left just like it used to be. I never would have guessed that that little tiny power supply could take down a couple of branches but afterwards I noticed that it did affect all branches, but those two severely. Turned on all breakers and retested and all comms are back to mint condition. Rebooted IoP and no more device errors during query. I would like to thank all who went before me, I have learned so much from you all. -Tim 4
larryllix Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 It's usually the little things in life that make or break us. Awesome! Congrats on your success. Now get some better quality sleep!
Brian H Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 I have seen reports of some of those small wall warts can be a lot of problems. They may have a nice AC rated capacitor across the AC input to absorb the internal noise or they just maybe power line noise makers. Some battery chargers for things like phones and other portable device can also be a problem. Glad you found the problems.
Geddy Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Great post! Thanks for sharing your efforts and findings. 13 hours ago, TJF1960 said: Found an outdoor outlet with a little tiny 5-volt wall wort power supply powering a 1 year old Wansview outdoor cam. This just proves that sometimes noise/communication issues isn't caused by NEW devices added to the system. OLD devices can impact longtime systems without notice/warning. 13 hours ago, TJF1960 said: I would like to thank all who went before me, I have learned so much from you all.
