Where to start with an Elk System

I have been watching the discussion of using an ELK and Insteon. I have a friend that is using ELK with his Crestron system (The joys of being an installer).

 

Where can I go to learn what I need and what would a new system cost me?

Hello AnthemAVM,

 

Communication between the Elk M1G and the ISY is performed via Ethernet. This requires the ELK-M1XEP ethernet add on module for the ELK.

 

That's the only real requirement that I know of. There are system kits available that include "common" elk accessories: http://www.elkproducts.com/products/m1/m1systems.htm

 

The ELK is a very flexible device - to give you an accurate component list, we'd need a lot more information on what you are trying to accomplish. Your friend, the installer, would be an excellent resource. He should be well versed in the ELK capabilities and options.

To add to IndyMike's info, kits will have most of what you need except for sensors. If you plan on using wireless sensors you'll need an M1XRF2G (link). This is compatible with any 319.5 Mhz Crystal transmitters, such as this one.

 

Additional keypads will run you about $100 to $150. If you plan on hooking up more than two or three input devices (such as a keypad, wireless receiver or zone expander board to add additional wired zones), you'll probably want to spring for a databus hub (link) to aid in the wiring and termination.
