ISY switching on unrelated devices when scene is activated

Hi,

I'm having a strange problem. I have set up a collection of scenes on my ISY. When a scene is activated by a switch it works fine and only that scene is affected. When a scene is activated programmatically via the admin panel, or from ILinc the scene appears to inadvertently activate other unrelated lights.

eg. I turn on a receptacle module in my living room on the main floor and the basement lights come on.

There are many scenes that are behaving this way ?!

I've tried restore devices from the admin screen. I've done this on all the switches and receivers related to the scenes in question. It does not appear to help.

Are there any tips you might provide to help me troubleshoot the source of this issue.

Thanks in advance,

John

Is it possible that some of your devices have an X-10 address assigned? I hear they can come from the factory this way. You can watch the event viewer for signs of X-10 activity. If so, follow the intructions for removing X-10 addresses from your affected devices.

Question : Why would there be any X-10 activity if I've never enabled X10, and do not have a single X-10 device on the system?

What would X10 activity look like in the log?

Where would I find the instructions to remove the X-10 addresses?

The only instructions I found require you to know the X-10 address. Given that I did not add the X-10 address how can I identify it to remove it?

I have had strange behavior in the past similar to this.

What helped me was to add the unintended device to the scene and then remove it from that scene. This process will remove all links assosiated with the uninteneded device from that scene.

Also, and I am not sure if this can be of issue, perhaps restore the PLM to ensure there are no Group mixups.

And using tools -> diagnostics -> read device links on the devices that are turning on/off that shouldn't and then using the compare feature to compare what's there to the ISY record is also helpful. I've found many links that I'd created manually or with other s/w that were still present when I switched to ISY. Once you know if there are some 'extra' links in the device you can hard reset it and then restore it from ISY.

I was not sure whether you had or had not enabled any of the X-10 addresses. Still, I have heard folks say that they can come from the factory with addresses. If you performed a factory reset before installation, then this is likely not a problem.

Under event viewer, I would expect to see an X-10 command, including house code, number, and on/off/dim/bright, etc... It is pretty obvious if it is there.

Instructions for removing X-10 addresses are in the instructions for each device. If you don't have them, they are available on-line. In general, put your device into unlinking mode (hold button 10 seconds, then hold again for 10 seconds) then send three consecutive, identical x-10 addresses (it does not matter which).

Thanks all for your help.

I've looked into the link tables. Took me a little while to decipher them. After a little digging I discovered that the device in question is in fact erroneously linked to my basement lights. The problem is that when I did a compare it looks as if the ISY is in agreement. I somehow have to remove this link from both the device and the ISY.

This raises the question as to why this erroneous link is not shown in the ISY Admin interface? Is there a way to do this?

I was looking into "hard resetting" the device. I am assuming this term refers to the procedure described in the "Restoring device to its Factory Defaults Settings" in the Switchlinc manual.

If you remove it in ISY then ISY will remove it from the device.

If it's not in ISY but in the device then hard reset the device (power off 10 seconds, press in for 3) then do a restore to the device from ISY. The restore will write all the links that ISY has in its database to the device. If there are others there too the ISY will not remove them - that's why the reset first

Hi endiablado,

In some cases, if you bring existing links, ISY captures the links and creates scenes out of them. This becomes problematic when one of the devices has a slave link while the other does not. This situation does happen if you had linked your devices with HL or if you did a cross link without performing the other side.

The solution is quite simple:

1. Create a dummy scene

2. Put the offending controller/responder in the scene

3. Remove the scene

With kind regards,

Michel

Just a follow up,

I've been working slowly but surely fixing one scene a a time. I've been following Mark's advice and adding the offending devices into a scene, then removing them. This seems to be working.

Is there any documentation on how to wipe every device on the system and start afresh?

Thanks for all your help

Hi endiablado,

What you need to do is:

1. Factory reset your ISY (http://www.universal-devices.com/mwiki/ ... ur_ISY-99i)

2. Upon reboot, do File | Restore Modem (PLM) ... this factory resets the PLM

3. Add your devices using the first option (Remove existing links)

With kind regards,

Michel
