ON/OFF Insteon Light switch weird issues

In my back porch I have 2 On/Off light switches (Not dimmer), one controls the garage lights and the other the porch light.  They are installed in the same box and are on separate circuits.  I also have a Insteon door sensor on the garage door.

The problem is the garage lights wont consistently turn on and off manually by pushing the button or if it works there is a delay, occasionally it works fine.  Turning on and off the lights using Agave, works fine every time.  I noticed that when I turn on the porch light or open the garage door, the LED lights on the garage light switch, flicker but the porch light LED does not flicker when turning on and off the garage lights or opening the door.

Now this problem of not being able to manually control the switch just started happening today and it seemed to be after I added a outdoor Insteon plug to the ISY.  Maybe a coincidence but I thought I would mention it.

I have noticed the LED's on I/O Lincs will flicker when other devices are activated but ive never seen LED's on a light switch do this.

Thanks

Have you tried to factory reset the switch? Since the problem is local, you could try to take the paddle off and clean the contacts

Depending on its age and model number.

There was a period of time where the 2476S Relay style and 2476S dimmer style SwitchLinc. Had a bad run of tact switches. The paddle would activate the switch and it would click but not make internal contact. Some only the Off or On switch and sometimes both. Remote controlling was perfectly fine. Smarthome actually gave us a 7 year warranty on that series of models.

Your description sounds like it maybe a tact switch. Sometimes fine, some times bad and some times wiggle the paddle it would work. I did see a how to on replacing them and I believe someone here has done it.

I should also mention that the garage light is on a 3way switch.  The other switch which is in the garage, is a manual switch which i keep on.  At all times and everything was working fine for a month until yesterday.

So I just had the switch not working when manually operating it but as soon as I turned on the light with agave, the switch started turning off and on about 10 times with no issue.  How do I factory reset the light switch?

Factory reset procedure

After the reset do a restore device

1) Pull out SwitchLinc Set button to remove power
2) Wait 5 seconds
3) Push in Set button and hold it. Do not let go
SwitchLinc will emit a long beep
4) When long beep stops, release Set button
A few seconds will pass SwitchLinc will double-beep The connected load will turn on

Techman left the instructions for that particular device but that applies to all recent (last few years) insteon switches.

If you type the insteon part number and out instruction manual after it,  it'll pull the manual up for those specific devices as well

Should it be deleted from the ISY before the reset?

Not necessarily, there are two procedures available to you.

  • Factory reset the device, then select it in the device tree, right click, pick restore device.

--OR--

  • Delete device from ISY, Factory Reset, re-add to ISY.

Which you pick depends... if it's only a device issue, the first is fine.  If the links in the ISY are  incorrect for some reason then you need the second.

I deleted the switch then did the factory reset.  Before adding it back to the ISY, I tried turning on the porch light and the garage light LED's, no longer flicker and the lights in the garage turn on and off normally.  I then added it to the ISY and noticed a big improvement on the ISY based on my other post "ISY running very slow".  Before the Admin console would take 20 seconds to load, now it is almost instant.  Plus when I added the garage switch, the linking process was instant where as before the reset, adding devices took forever (Progress bar).  So I think this fixed 2 problems (I hope).

Thank you everyone!

Sounds like a big improvement.

Both switches have to be an Insteon or Icon for both to work correctly. I used an Insteon switch module and a mechanical switch. In my case I wired both travelers to the Red output. So either mechanical setting still worked with the Insteon module and the switch did nothing.

Glad it works OK for you.
