I purchased a used one on eBay and it arrived DOA. After some negotiation with the seller, I got a partial refund and then sent it off for repairs. I've recently started to experience symptoms very similar to yours, but I didn't have the firmware or hub considerations. Everything had been working fine, then just started failing intermittently.
