Any Thought on a PC Based Product

Wondering if UDI ever considered having a PC hosted application (i.e. porting the guts of the firmware to a PC). There may be applications where this is useful. I know the users of HomeSeer would probably rather have an ap on the PC than additional hardware. I guess I am thinking it could be sold at a price less that the hardware version but still giving you guys a good profit (win/win for UDI and some potential customers).

Just a thought!

heatvent,

Yes, we have and the conclusion was: it's a great idea. Our problem remains resources and "my" worry is that we might lose focus on ISY itself. That would not be a win for our existing customers. Nonetheless, it's a great idea.

Thanks for your feedback.

With kind regards,

Michel

I would like to add that, as someone who moved from a PC-based solution to the ISY-99i, I would hate to see focus on the ISY-99i hardware wane in favor of PC-based software. I am convinced that a dedicated piece of hardware is a better solution for more instantaneous control and response to Insteon events than PC software.

I also appreciate the focus on Insteon, and don't want to see that focus discarded for broader based support (ZWave, etc.), at least not in the ISY-99i device.

I agree. Even though I run Sage, a server based DVR system that is on 24/7, I use the ISY for home control. It's one thing to have a pc crash and lose tv recordings but it is much worse to lose the home automation system.

I do the same at my business.

I say stick with the stand alone. PC's are full of bugs, trying to reboot themselves, and just generally not reliable when left to themselves. If you cleaned up a pc and only had it run a very minimal set of application it might work, but then you basically have a pc serving as a stand alone insteon device. So why not just use the isy at a much lower cost, smaller footprint, land ower energy consumption.
