Trouble Connecting to 2412S PLM with USB to Serial

Per the original topic:

I've been trying to migrate from my working 994i to the new eisy, but cannot get the eisy to talk to the PLM.  I backed up the 994 configuration like the instructions said, connected my plm with the insteon provided plm to serial cable, and a usb to serial adapter.  Using the admin console, it tried to restore the backup configuration, but the progress dialog kept looping from 0 - 100% all day.  I exited out of the admin console, and tried again, but the plm diagnostics status menu item just says not connected.  If I try to reset the PLM, it errors with an error, -300000/-20.  As a side note, connecting the PLM back to the original 994 works perfectly.

Using the hdmi output and a keyboard, I tailed the /var/log/messages file, and see the system detecting the usb adapter, but don't know if there are any other log files on the system I can look at to see if there are better exceptions/errors/debug about why the system can't talk to the plm.

I tried a factory reset on the eisy to start over, and the same behavior persists.

I have also bought 3 different USB -> serial adapters with different chipsets, and all behave the same way.

Any advice would be helpful.

Hummm.  I took my PLM off my 994i, plugged it into the 485-232-USB adapter kit from UD(btw, same USB-232 in my fix-it kit) into my eisy, and eisy could see it right away.  Couldn't add any devices(Insteon engine not found error) so I did the set button press factory reset on the PLM and hooked it back up and it worked like a charm without even having to re-boot.  I'm still at 5.5.0(afraid to upgrade) and I've got one Insteon node that works fine, a night light par38 lamp that I turned on last night and it went off programmatically this morning at sunrise.  It sounds like you did everything I did plus.  My 2413S PLM on a USB converter to my eisy seems to be working fine.  I'll be interested in what you find.  Good Luck!     -Grant

Have you enabled Insteon in the configuration/system tab?

Yes, INSTEON Support was checked.  When I tried again this morning after my post, the console finally upgraded the eisy, after the admin console saying the versions were incompatible. Yesterday, clicking yes to upgrade didn't do anything, but today it seems to have upgraded the eisy.

After it upgraded and I was able to log in to it running 5.5.2 , I exited, and unplugged the eisy and let it sit for a bit. I then plugged it back in, and tried over again.  For some reason it was finally able to talk to the plm.  I'm not sure if it was the upgrade to 5.5.2, or if it was unplugging the eisy and letting it sit that finally let it connect.

I'll now try to restore the backup I made of the 994, and hope all goes well.

Sadly restoring the backup didn't work. It went back to not detecting the PLM.  My only guess is that the 994 is more tolerant if the PLM isn't operating perfectly.  I guess I'll just have to wait and hope that insteon comes thru with new PLMs in march.

Another followup. I dug out an old PLM, that was flaky in the past with the 994 and attached that to the eisy.  That seems to work, so one of the PLMs works fine with the 994 but not the eisy, and the other was flaky with the 994, but works with the eisy.

Am nervous about migrating everything to the eisy since I don't know if I trust this old PLM, since I shelved it in the past for a reason.

The 2412S PLM is an older single band device with a limited link database. Its RS232 interface is outdated and may not support some of the newer devices. It was replaced by the 2413S.

It's possible that it's not compatible with the Polisy and eisy.

There where two link database sized 2412S. Early revisions where 417 Links, later where 2016 links. The 2016 link models where reported to start missing things at around 800 links.

Slower memory as reported over the 1023 link 2413S link memory.

The serial daughter board in the V2.3 2313S and below is the same board but as you indicated a slower memory speed. 2.4 and above the serial chip  had a higher ESD rating and the signal line protective network on them.
