I just successfully updated from 4.9.4 to 5.3.4.  I did not have a z-wave dongle or light protruding from the back of the ISY so I assumed I had the 500 series?  

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Youd have the 300 since the 500 isn't compatible with 4.xx firmware

when the LED is off, its hard to tell that its there.  Shine the flashlight from your phone around Port A and then you will see the blue of the LED.

from the admin console, z-wave version 4.81.00 is a 300 series board, z-wave version 6.8x.yy is a 500 series board.
