Old System Upgrade Guidance

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have an older isy994i with 50+ Insteon devices plus a Polisy that I use for some Node Servers like MyQ, Open Weather, Ping, etc. It's been running great for 8-10 years and then last week my PLM died. I ordered a new one, swapped it out and things mostly worked but not everything. For instance Fast On and Fast Off commands from dimmer switches no longer work. Programs that are run via key pads no longer work. I can no longer adjust ramp rates on dimmers. Mostly small stuff but still broken. This sent me down the forum rabbit hole.

So since isy994 is no longer supported at I have a Polisy already I figured I would upgrade my system to Isy on Polisy and get up and running on the latest and greatest. However, it's hard to tell how I should get to the latest and greatest.

From IoX Launcher I selected Polisy and Admin Console (it shows that I am running version 5.4.4). It tells me that version 5.8.0 is available. I select System > Configuration and Upgrade Packages. it asks for confirmation and when I click Yes the console immediately closes and there is a beep. After some time I hear 2 beeps from the system but that is it. According to the upgrade instructions I should get 4. I clear Java cache, delete IoX Launcher and start.jni and redownload start.jni. When I run the IoX Launcher I see that I am still running 5.4.4. I've tried a couple times with the same results and also tried the Help > Automatically upgrade to 5.8.0 option. No upgrade happens.

So my first question is, is my system too outdated for this process to work? Do I need to ssh into my Polisy and upgrade manually? If so what are the instructions to do that. I found instructions in the forums to run a manual upgrade but they were from 2021 so I thought there might be something more useful.

My second question is, what should my end goal be if I'm just trying to get Isy running on my Polisy with the latest and greatest.

Thanks

- Alex

When you clear your java cache you need to check all 3 boxes. When the cache clears it will delete the IoX Launcher from your desktop

Then download the IoX launhcher from this link:  https://isy.universal-devices.com/start.jnlp

If you click on help about, what is are your firmware and UI versions

Some of the early Polisys require a bios uipdate, you may need to open a support ticket if you're still hsaving issues.

Thanks, yes I did select all 3 check boxes. Firmware and UI match as "Polisy v.5.4.4"

Polygot 3 is running version 3.0.63

I've tried several attempts at updating the packages and nothing works. Is there a manual process that can maybe nudge me forward to v5.5

Aside from the assistance @Techman has offered I'm a bit confused. Can you confirm something for us?

Is the ISY994 still running devices or have you moved to IoX on the Polisy? Your comment in the last sentence made me ask this: "I'm just trying to get Isy running on my Polisy"

If the ISY994 is still the controller for the Insteon devices and you changed the PLM did you go through the process outlined in the wiki? Do you have any battery devices that you haven't re-linked correctly after replacing the PLM?

If the ISY994 is no longer in the mix (then why did you mention it?) you might need to open a support ticket directly with UD to get help getting past where you are on IoX and PG3. I don't know if the Polisy is stuck because you aren't on PG3x on the device or if there's something else hung up at 5.4.4.

Open a support ticket with UD: https://www.universal-devices.com/my-tickets

The current firmware version is 5.8.0.

Try removing power from the Polisy for about a minute then let it boot up, then click on upgrade packages again.

I tried this and it did not help. I also upgraded the BIOS with "Upgrade BIOS" from the Configuration tab of the admin console. After this process I tried the upgrade packages again and still no upgrade.

I have the isy994i still running and all of the Insteon devices are still linked with that. It mostly works but not all the way as I mentioned in my original post. I want to migrate from there to ISY on Polisy. So I am trying to get IoP working correctly and then I will migrate from isy994i. But clearly something is not working correctly if I cannot even upgrade it from 5.4.4 to 5.8.

Regarding the battery powered devices I only have 2. One I was able to successfully relink and the second devices seems to be corrupted. I cannot put it into linking mode nor factory reset it. I have disabled it from the ISY for now.

So right now I'm running v 5.3.4 on my isy994i and v 5.4.4 on Polisy. Only the isy994i is linked to the Insteon devices currently and the PLM is plugged into the icy994i.

Yeah, as @Techman suggested...open a support ticket with UD to get the Polisy updated to current IoX and PG3x then you could try the migration process.

The underlying issue is not being able to get things running again with the new PLM and the ISY994. If you don't have a good/current backup you could be migrating to the Polisy with similar issues.

I know there was a few IoX versions that would get frozen trying to update on the Polisy, but it's been so long I don't remember the exact versions.

Thanks I submitted a ticket. While I wait, I can no longer ssh into my polisy after one of the reboots though IoP is running and  PG3 is running. I get "connection refused" error. Is there a simple way to get rid of this error or do I need to buy an old monitor cable and connect directly to the Polisy to get in there?

At this point it's best not to attempt any further interactions with the Polisy as you might create more issues. Usually UDI responds to support tickets within 24 hours.

In the meantime you should clean up any issues with the ISY994 as you don't want to migrate them over to the Polisy. Can you elaborate on the issues you're having with the ISY994.

Yeah they were super speedy in replying. Said the OS is too old and device needs to be sent there for repair.

Regarding the isy994 issues, do you think it's a problem with restoring my new PLM? I was just thinking it was really outdated software causing things to not restore properly.

Do you have any ideas?

Issue number 1:

I have programs that are supposed to run when I do fast on/off from a dimmer switch. For example, if I double press my dimmer switch in my master bedroom it will turn off all of the lights in that room/bath room area. I cannot tell if Fast Off is not sending a Fast Off signal or if the program is not receiving the signal. How to tell?

The programs that I have running on simple timers are working fine. For example turning on exterior lights at sun down.

Right click on the program that was supposed to run, then click on status. That will show you the last run time.

Regarding restoring the PLM, do you see any red explanation points or a 1011 to the left of a device name?  If not then the restore was prabably successful.

How many programs and/or devices are you having issues with?

Be sure to do a backup any time you make a program or a device addition or correction

It shows nothing under status (so hasn't been run since last reboot a couple of days ago). But again I don't know if that's because it's not receiving the Fast Off signal or the dimmer switch is not sending it. If I select Fast Off from the device in the admin console still the program does not get run.

Regarding the red exclamation points and 1011 icons, there are no exclamation points. There is one 1011 icon and that is by a battery operated device. That device seems to be working though. I put it in link mode and did a restore. It is correctly controlling the light I want it to control but the 1011 icon will not go away.

I have another batter device that I disabled as I was not able to put it in linking mode or factory reset.

Going back to Fast Off command, is there a way to see if the device is sending the command?

In Admin Console open Event Viewer (Tools -> Diagnostics -> Event Viewer).

Set it to Level 3 "Device Communication Events".

Then go operate the device for fast off.

Depending on how much other activity you have going on it might scroll quickly. Can click the "Copy to Clipboard" icon and then paste the log into Notepad.

I'm not 100% sure, but you might be looking for something like "LTOFFRR".

Do a  restore device on the dimmer switch, then do a fast off, and then check the program status. If  the status is still blank then post a copy of the program.

On the device with the 1011, put it into the linking mode the right click on the device and click on write updates.

Sometimes the timing on a fast off command can be a bit tricky. Try different intervals between the double off press.

In admin console right click the program and select "run then". Do you get the results expected from the "THEN" portion of the program? If so, as @Techman suggested post the program. (Right click on the program and "copy to clipboard" then paste as text in the post. That's better than a screenshot or photo of the screen. It helps those trying to help you by not having to re-type edits in a reply and also makes it searchable should you ever want to find it again in the future.)

Just by chance...have you rebooted the device since the time change?

So this is interesting. If I click the on/off buttons in the admin console I see the events show up in the event viewer. However if I go to the physical switch and press it I do not get any events showing up in the Event Viewer. That can't be the expected behavior can it?

The device "works" in both cases as it turns the light on/off

Yes, if I simply run the Then clause it works fine. Here is the text

Your issue appears to be with the timing on the double off presses as everything else is normal.

One other thing you can try is doing a factory reset on the switch then a restore device.

To do a factory reset, pull out the set button, wait a few seconds then push the button in and hold it in. The switch will beep. Do not let go of the button until the beeping stops. The load should then turn on.

I've been double tapping that button for 8 years so I don't think it's a timing issue. Also I switched the program to run on the "Off" command as a test and it still does not work. Also, if I run the Fast Off command from the Admin Console it does not work.

I'm wondering why I don't see the communication in the event viewer when I physically press the switch. Like the signal is not being picked up by the PLM. Interference? Of course Scenes work just fine, it's only programs running from switch presses that is not working...

Because your program is “switched” so that’s only when physically operated. Otherwise you need to use “status”, and it would trigger from admin console.

If the event viewer doesn’t see a physical switch event (on/off to fast on/fast off) then it’s not sending a signal to the ISY994. The switch could have gone bad, but if able to control from admin console does seem to be a noise issue or failing switch.

If you operate any other devices in the program (or in the same area) do you see the changes in event viewer?
